Such claims were made by 6% of new product launches in 2011 vs. only 2% during the previous year. Reflecting growing demand for greater nutritional value, baking and snack food companies also focus on fortified and added calcium products.

Children connect with characters
Producers in China extensively use cartoon and other child-friendly characters on new bakery product launches aimed at younger consumers, and it is inevitable that

character licensing will increase in the category. Disney-themed products are especially prominent, given the growing presence of Disney in the country. With construction of a new Disneyland in Shanghai, the first to be built in mainland China, beginning in 2011 and scheduled to open in 2016, the brand will only see increased exposure. Japanese bakery companies such as Ezaki Glico provide strong competition to Western brands in this regard because they are more in tune with local trend-setting cartoon and pop culture.
