MOCHI DONUTS
A hybrid between cake donuts and
chewy Japanese mochi rice cakes,
mochi donuts originated at Mister
Donut in Japan and spread to the
U.S. through Hawaii in the early '90s.1
Today, these donuts offer consumers
a unique global take on a traditional
American comfort food.
The two main types of mochi donuts
are made with different flour:1
pon
de ring: light, pull-apart donuts made
with tapioca powder and glutinous
rice flour: the denser, U.S. recipe
with glutinous rice flour.
Matcha glaze is a popular way
to incorporate Japanese flavor,
but mochi donuts are easy to
get creative with - fruit, matcha,
chocolate, cinnamon and even ube
