Refiners’ ‘corn sugar’ bid rejected by F.D.A.
WASHINGTON — The food processing industry may not call high-fructose corn syrup “corn sugar.” The Food and Drug Administration denied a petition from the Corn Refiners Association to use corn sugar as an alternate name for HFCS, because the petition “does not provide sufficient grounds for the agency to authorize ‘corn sugar’ as an alternate common or usual name for HFCS.” The F.D.A. stated it has specific standards of identity for sugar and syrup. “F.D.A.’s regulatory approach for the nomenclature of sugar and syrups is that sugar is a solid, dried, and crystallized food; whereas syrup is an aqueous Continued on Page 10

Campbell advancing growth strategies
NEW YORK — Denise Morrison, president and chief executive officer of Campbell Soup Co., said the Camden, N.J.based company is “working very hard to lay the groundwork for a different and exciting future for Campbell.” Ms. Morrison spoke May 30 as part of the Sanford C. Sudden reversal in sugar supply situation
Analysts forecast sizeable global sugar supplies in 2011-12
n mid-March domestic sugar prices were rising in Mexico amid concerns about tight supplies after a prolonged drought in 2011. Prices there were approaching levels some suggested may attract U.S. sugar shipments into Mexico, opposite the normal flow. At the same time, the U.S. 2011-12 ending stocks-to-use ratio was an unsustainable 6.8%, the lowest in

years. And nearby world raw sugar futures were near their 2012 highs. What a difference a couple of months can make in the sugar market. Mexico reversed from a sugar deficit to a possible 1-million-tonne surplus. The U.S. stocks-to-use ratio surged to 14.2% and near the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s “target” level. And nearby world raw sugar futures (New York) have dropped about 20%, hovering near 21-month lows. So what changed to make the United States, Mexico and the rest of the world “suddenly” awash in sugar?
