Investor group offers
$9.8 billion for
D.E Master Blenders
AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS —
An investor group led by Joh. A. Benckiser GmBH, Ludwigshafen, Germany, has
made an offer to acquire the D.E Master
Blenders 1753 coffee company for €12.50
($16.36) per share. The total offer is
valued at €7.5 billion ($9.8 billion). The
board of D.E.M.B. has expressed its support of the offer.
“After having carefully and diligently assessed J.A.B.’s offer, resulting in today’s intended offer, the
board fully supports and unanimously
recommends this offer to the shareholders for acceptance,” said Norman

attacks and strokes in five years. Reducing dietary sodium intake is a component
of the initiative, because excess sodium
has been identified as a contributory factor in the development of hypertension, a
risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
Food formulators are making an effort to reduce the sodium content of
processed foods, since according to the
Food and Drug Administration, an estimated 77% of Americans’ sodium intake

for fiscal 2014 would maintain or even increase spending on food safety. Clearly,
the administration sees food safety as a
priority from which the federal government

cannot afford to withdraw resources. Providing food safety agencies adequate funding in recent years also has been a priority
for Congress, but it was uncertain how food
safety programs ultimately will fare given
the concerns over the deficit.
The federal government’s two food safety
agencies are the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which is part of the Department of
Health and Human Services, and the Food
Safety Inspection Service, which is part of
the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The F.S.I.S. provides federal inspection of
meat, poultry and processed egg products
establishments and support for similar state
inspection programs. The F.D.A. regulates
the rest of the food supply, domestically produced and imported.
