AMERICANS ARE FALLING IN LOVE with fresh
donuts, all over again, only this time with a keener
eye on delicious flavor combinations.
The Underground Donut Tour recently completed
its search for America's Greatest Donuts. Over
the course of this contest, more than 300 shops
were nominated, 160 were put up to vote and
nearly 8,000 votes were cast. After two months
of nominations, voting and winner selection, the
winners of America's Greatest Donut Contest have
been revealed.
The Overall Fan Favorite winner was Rise 'n Roll
Bakery, based in Indiana. Its Cinnamon Caramel
Donut was voted far and away the most popular
donut in America. As winner, the bakery will be
awarded a $500 prize or donation to a charity
of their choice. Rise 'n Roll also won four other
categories: Greatest Cake Donut, Greatest Cinnamon
Sugar Donut, Greatest Unique Filling and Greatest
Unique Toppings.
National Donut Trail
In specific parts of the country like
Ohio, donuts are beloved for
many reasons. Ohio even has
its own celebration.
Visitors had one more
donut-filled reason to
travel to Butler County,
Ohio, for National Donut
Day in June. The IKEA
West Chester partnered
with the Donut Trail to
celebrate National Donut
Day with a limited-edition
IKEA-inspired meatball donut.
Featuring a light and fluffy base,

lingonberry glaze, lingonberry sauce, and topped
with a delectable IKEA meatball or plant-based
ball, visitors experienced IKEA in a whole new way.
Meatball donuts were offered complimentary to
hungry customers this summer.
Highlighting local artisan donut shops, the Butler
County Donut Trail encompasses 13 mom-and-pop
donut shops. Visitors can experience the trail by
collecting stamps on an official passport. Once
fully complete, each passport can be redeemed for
an official Donut Trail T-shirt.
Branching out
Shipley Do-Nuts, which has been making donuts for
85 years, has inked deals with two veteran multiunit
operators to develop up to 20 new locations in the
North and South Texas regions.
Mohammed Ahmed, a multi-brand franchisee who
owns more than 95 Jack in the Box restaurants in
Texas markets, will open his first Shipley Do-Nuts in
Weslaco this spring.
" As a 35-year resident of Houston, I've been a
longtime fan of Shipley Do-Nuts - they are the
only donuts my family and I like - and I've been
impressed at the company's growth over the past
year with the new ownership group and leadership
team, " says Ahmed. " I want to be part of this
company's success. "
Shipley Do-Nuts is coming off a record-setting
year for unit growth. The company currently has
agreements in place to open more than 350 new
locations throughout Texas, Georgia, Maryland,
Tennessee, Florida and Colorado over the next five
years.
The company is also expanding in North Texas, with
Houston restaurateur Sam Khader upping his current
development deal to 15 from its original six.
