Through a variety of programs, such as individual consultations, community programs and store tours, staff dietitians can bring new business and credibility to your instore, and can make a big difference in your shoppers’ lives.

Individual Services
Individual consultations are a big part of staff dietitians’ duties. They are tailored to meet each patient’s dietary needs, with an emphasis on proper nutrition. “We discuss medical history, diet history, medication and

nutrient interactions, menu planning, and recipes,” Grushon says. “For instance, if they need help with how they can eat out healthy, I offer some tips for what to look on the menu, but also have them come up with ways to make meals more healthy themselves.” The goal is to help people understand how their diet directly affects their health. “I want the patient to walk away with confidence that they can make the changes that need to be made towards an easier, healthier and happier lifestyle,” Grushon says. And many of those changes involve food shopping at the grocery store. “I’ve heard clients say they just don’t have time to shop healthy or it’s too expensive to shop healthy,”

Grushon says. “But once we talk about their concerns, they discover that shopping healthy is simply a matter of properly planning their meals and shopping experience. And once they understand how the store is laid out to help them, they really get excited and see it as a new adventure.”

Community Programs
In addition to individual consultations, instore staff dietitians, including Grushon, commonly offer community programs. Businesses such as daycares, large companies, and everything in between are beginning to seek out health advice for their employees. “More and more companies realize that having healthy employees positively affects their bottom line,” Grushon says. “Healthy employees often result in lower health care costs and higher employee productivity and attendance. So it’s a win-win for the company.” Grushon will go to local businesses and make nutrition presentations emphasizing the group’s interests. Popular topics include weight management, quick and healthy meal ideas, disease prevention, nutrition and aging, and food trends and fad diets. Wellness screenings, which test cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose, body fat and body mass index, are also available. And Grushon offers various nutrition classes, weight loss programs, and cooking classes throughout the year, as well. The community programs

1. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail! Set aside time every week to look through coupons, ads, and recipes to plan your meals. Start a pantry and refrigerator inventory list so you do not buy what you already have. 2. Always have a list on hand! This lessons the chance of buying on impulse and making extra shopping trips. 3. Eat a snack before you shop. If you shop hungry you are more likely to pick unhealthy quick foods and potentially buy more than you had intended to. 4. Choose healthy foods from all food groups. The best way to do this is by shopping the perimeter of the store: fresh fruits and vegetables in produce, whole grain breads from bakery, fresh lean cuts of meat and seafood from the meat department, and low-fat dairy products in the dairy case. 5.
