EMPOWERING Strategies The 2011 IDDBA show sets the stage for a new way of thinking for the instore bakery and deli. by John Unrein For nearly a half century, the International Dairy-Deli-Bakery Association’s annual seminar and expo has provided industry thought leaders with a center stage to dive into new ideas and innovations. This year’s event, conducted June 5-7 in Anaheim, CA, offered something even more valuable: a balcony seat to look out over sweeping changes in the economy and consumer shopping habits and to gather empowering strategies to respond to these seismic shifts. As Carol Christison, the IDDBA’s executive director, pointed out in her June 6 speech, today’s companies are thinking smaller, with the customer in mind – not the bottom line. “Customers want customized products and service,” she said. “They like knowing the owner and that their loyalty makes a difference.” Adding further perspective, author and Gallup veteran Marcus Buckingham shared his experiences that all companies’ cultures are indeed local. “There is no such thing as a great company,” he said in his June 7 presentation. “Once you go inside a company, you find its culture ranges by team, by team, by team.” So there is the key takeaway from this year’s IDDBA show: Bakery and deli shoppers are craving much more local connections, while industry retailers and suppliers are more apt to deliver effectively to what the market demands by empowering their people at a local level. “It’s the manager – not the company culture – that makes the difference,” says Buckingham. “The three most powerful questions a manager can ask are: Are my colleagues committed to quality work? Do I know what is expected of me? At work, do I have a chance to do what I do best everyday?” Another IDDBA speaker, Harold Lloyd challenged store managers to change the way they think about motivating staff associates. He presented a groundbreaking report on the new Department Manager Attitude Survey, in which hundreds of department managers shared their ideas. The following are Lloyd’s top 10 operational takeaways: 1. Have a mandatory goal-writing class for all managers in your company. Then hold one annually for newly promoted managers. 28% couldn’t recite their own goals this year. Only 75% give goals to their employees, and 95% of those (according to Lloyd) are poorly written. 2. Hey supervisors…chill! Think of yourself as more of a career builder and less of a stealth bomber. 3. Help them to grow their sale. Don’t just tell or yell. Teach to sell. | 18 | inStorebuyer | July 2011 |
