Utilizing high quality packaging while showcasing the quality of product gives the retailer the best opportunity to increase sales. “In general, customers seem to like packaging that showcases the product without a group of labels covering it up,” says John Rose, category manager for bakery, Brookshire Grocery Co. “That said, we continue to look for ways to provide the necessary product information that customers want on

the package, without forgetting the original purpose, which is to showcase our great bakery products.” According to Rose, customers’ preferences have evolved. “The more recent trend seems to be craft boxes, which is a shift from the ubiquitous clamshell package,” he says. Sustainability remains at the forefront of shopper concern. To address this, Hy-Vee has begun to gradually replace plastic packaging with recyclable plastics that bear a number one plastic identification code or cardboard. The first step for Hy-Vee is to work with suppliers to find replacement packaging that provides the necessary shelf life based on the products and then test for a companywide rollout. “We’ll just take it item by item and gradually roll out each item as we find the appropriate cardboard packaging,” Byington says. ”We just want to do it because we know it’s the right thing for the future of retail and the future of our planet.”
