Created as a voluntary partnership, GreenChill members focus on reducing refrigerant emissions and decreasing their impact on the environment and ultimately people’s health. By joining GreenChill, Meijer is pledging to meet higher standards that go beyond the regulatory requirements to protect the ozone layer and combat climate change. According to GreenChill, partners have refrigerant emission rates that are nearly 50% lower than the national average; if more supermarkets and supercenters set forth similar procedures, the industry could save more than $100 million in refrigerant costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an amount equal to 2.5 billion gallons of gasoline. In addition to joining the GreenChill partnership, Meijer is building all new stores using Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program guidelines and principles, and is testing wind turbines at several locations with the understanding that tapping wind as a renewable power source can make a difference in reducing a total carbon footprint. 20 Annual Sales: $750 million Number of Stores: 11 Store Banners: Fairway Market Address: 2284 12th Ave., New York, NY 10027 Web: Phone: (646) 616-8000 Key Personnel: Omar Burhan, deli specialist; Sara McConigle, bakery Fairway Market Special events drive the ever-growing business at Fairway Market, one of the nation’s best at creating marketing promotions for seasonal occasions. Fairway Market stores recently conducted their annual “Hosting the Holiday” event in which shoppers sampled main courses, side dishes and baked goods. Featured items included autumn vegetable puree soup, pumpkin bisque, candied sweet potatoes, roasted butternut squash, savory sausage stuffing, roasted Murray’s Turkey and gravy and Fairway’s famous apple, pumpkin and sweet potato pies.   Other fall promotions involved Fairway bakeries selling Obama and Romney-related cupcakes in blue and red, featuring donkeys and elephants and other election-related images. Overall votes were tabulated on Nov. 5 to determine the winner in each store. The election cupcakes sold for $1.49 each at all Fairway Market locations in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Earlier this year, Fairway Market opened a 68,000-sq-ft store at Long Island’s Roosevelt Raceway Center in Westbury, NY. A 12th Fairway Market was expected to open in November in a unique midtown Manhattan location on Second Avenue. | 34 | inStorebuyer | November 2012 |
