The East region also posted the highest average sales of the four US regions, at $4,511, up 1 percent from the previous year. During the latest 52 weeks, the week of the Christmas holiday (the week ending December 27, 2014) was the highest selling week for breads and rolls, at $4,925 per store. The second highest-selling week during this period was the week of Thanksgiving 2014 at $4,815 per store. Breads and Rolls Dollar Contribution to Bakery Sales by Region ,2 Breads and rolls contributed 28 percent to bakery department dollar sales during the 52 weeks ending October 31, 2015. Breads and rolls averaged $3,328 per store per week, an increase of 1.5 percent versus the prior year. Breads accounted for 52.3 percent of sales during this time while rolls accounted for 47.7 percent. Breads posted average sales of $1,741 per store per week, steady compared to the previous year, while rolls posted sales of $1,587 per store per week, up 2.4 percent from the previous year. Breads and Rolls $3 SPOTLIGHT For the Love of Bread American consumers love fresh breads and rolls. Ten to 15 years ago, the low-carb craze saw the US population shun breads in an attempt to eat healthier. A study in 2000 showed more than a three percent decline in the sales of breads and rolls while another stated that 40 percent of Americans were trying to limit their intake of carbohydrates. However, the landscape changed by 2005 and Americans came back to bread in a big way. Bread consumption rebounded through 2007 and continues to grow.
