savory, these consumers are
really wanting smaller, snackable portions that give them 'permission' to enjoy more indulgent foods," she says. "Specific to tailgating,
consumers are looking for small bites, finger foods and appetizers they
can eat easily during timeouts, conversations, tossing the ball around
and gearing up for the game."

Offering a boost
Like many aspects of consumers' everyday lives, tailgating has been
made easier by growing retail foodservice trends. Not only are tailgating options made much simpler, consumers now have a multitude
of options they may not have had before.
"The rise of prepared foods within the supermarket has opened the
door to so many more options for consumers," Battistoni says. "These
new options make it easier than ever before to bring a variety of
great-tasting foods to tailgating celebrations without requiring a lot of
preparation in the kitchen. Now, consumers can choose from a seemingly endless array of prepared foods catering to many different tastes
with very little effort."

Many tailgaters are looking for finger foods and other snacks they
can easily consume during conversations and tailgating games.

Of course, retailers need to convey that thought to the consumer,
ideally well before game day. Targeted digital strategies, like e-blasts
and digital coupon offers, can alert consumers to game day deals."
Additionally, retailers should consider offering loyalty programs to
encourage repeat prepared foods purchases during football season,"
Battistoni says. "Overall, to influence shoppers looking for tailgating
food solutions, retailers must reach them well before game day."
