With the trend of consumers looking for
ready-to-eat meals only growing over the past
year, it's no surprise that the prepared entrees
category has had some success lately.
Both average weekly sales per store and
contribution to deli department sales were up
over the last 52 weeks, nationally and in every
region outside of the West, where the category
saw a slight dip.
Nationally, prepared entrees saw a $31
increase in average weekly sales per store,
jumping to $1,757. Contribution to deli department sales increased from 6.5 to 6.6 percent.
The Central, East and South regions each saw
both metrics increase as well.

The category was steady throughout the
year and saw a significant jump around the
Christmas holiday, when average weekly sales
per store jumped to more than $2,770.

The catch-all category of "Other Entrees"
accounted for 26 percent of deli prepared
entrees' dollar share. Pasta entrees accounted
for 15 percent, while Pork and Asian Entrees
each accounted for 9 percent. Franks and
Dinner Sausages, Mexican Entrees, and Beef
were at 8 percent each.
