Cleaning
the
instore
label
It's not necessarily clear, but
it's more than just a trend now

A recent GlobalData consumer survey says that 70 percent of
consumers have some idea of what the term means. In 2015 that
number was 66 percent.

"Consumers now also perceive clean label products as those that
contain the fewest ingredients, with nothing harmful added, and
are not overly processed," says Sargent. "With millennials being the
major drivers in the demand over the past
few years, they have continued to push
for more authenticity, transparency
along with information that gives

"With no set definition of clean label, consumer perceptions have
varied over the years," says Kathy Sargent, market director of sweet
foods for Corbion in Lenexa, Kansas. "But for the most part, it general
means an easy-to-understand ingredient statement that doesn't elicit
questions on what's being included in the foods they purchase."
With consumers' perceived raised awareness comes increased interest
in clean label products. The same GlobalData study states that half of
American consumers find the idea of on-pack information that states
where a product was made is "very appealing." That number rises to 57
percent for consumers in the age range of 25 to 34.

T

he jury is still out when it comes to clean label. It's a key
marketing buzzword with no set definition, but it has found a
stronghold among consumers.
