Sensus, a Dutch ingredient company, said research it funded demonstrated the
prebiotic benefits of its inulin fiber, even in small doses. The data could bode well
for inulin as a healthful ingredient in grain-based foods.

A bill requiring changes in allergen labeling passed the House of Representatives
and will become law in January 2006 if it is signed by President Bush. The legislation
would require that food makers label in plain language the presence of allergens.

Stunning errors have led scientists to a false linkage between HFCS intake and rising
obesity rates, according to a new study. In one article, the linkage was based on a
look at corn syrup, which is functionally and compositionally different than HFCS.

With the pending retirement of Richard Bell after more than 27 years at Riceland
Foods Inc., K. Daniel Kennedy will take over as president and chief executive
officer. Mr. Bell joined Riceland after a distinguished career of public service.

"Influencing the influencers" will be the theme of Wheat Foods Council programming
in the year ahead. The W.F.C. said its main target will be nutritionists and the health
community for its message that grain-based foods are important in a healthy diet.

Perhaps more often than anyone would like
to acknowledge, participants in grain-based
foods these days are tempted to wonder
about the future of this business amidst all
of the negatives that arise. If an antidote
to these feelings could be concocted, it
would be hard to come up with anything
equal to the investment the Weston family
has made and is about to make in this
business. Here is a multi-generation family,
some in Canada and some in Britain, who
have not just adhered to and built a vast
empire from their foundation in baking,
but who have continued to take bold,
bolstering steps.
The latest such venture came last week
with the disclosure that Associated British
Foods, the group in which the family has a
major stake in the U.K., has agreed to pay
$1,350 million to acquire the bakers yeast,
ingredients, spice and herb business of
Burns Philp of Australia. When completed,
this purchase will give A.B.F. a North
American business doing an annual volume
near $2 billion, of which a very large part
will be in ingredients serving grain-based
foods. The acquisition will make A.B.F. the
leader in bakers yeast on three continents,
North and South America and Asia.
Considering that George Weston Ltd.,
the Canada-based unit, now ranks as one
of the largest baking companies in North
America, the family's commitment to the
industry looms of great importance. Even
though the two firms are very separate
entities, their common stake in grain-based
foods is a heady vote of confidence. MBN
