Dry milk product prices were mixed
last week after weeks of steady upward
movement for many. Additional milk
supply over the holiday allowed for increased production of most products.
Low- and medium-heat nonfat dry
milk prices were mixed, with some
weakness noted. Production was up.
"The buyer angst that drove prices to
their current levels is beginning to quell
as most immediate needs are satisfied,"
the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.
But high-heat nonfat dry milk prices
were firm, with some expecting shortages
this fall. Demand increased seasonally, and
some processors switched to high-heat
production over low- and medium-heat.
Dry buttermilk prices held firm. Production increased. Supplies were tight. Overall demand was good, although demand
from ice cream makers eased seasonally.
Prices of lactose and whey protein
concentrate were steady to firm, mostly
due to tight supplies for spot demand.
Butter prices were sharply lower last
week after surging 10c a lb the previous
two weeks. Production increased. Demand was fair. Cream supplies grew as

milk production increased seasonally and
milkfat yields improved. Demand from
ice cream manufacturers decreased.
Prices of mozzarella, American process
and cheddar blocks were higher last week
on seasonal demand. Mozzarella supplies
were tight. Cheddar barrel prices weakened as the tight supply situation eased. MBN
Egg Products
Egg product prices were mostly steady
last week. Breaking stock prices were
1@3c a dozen lower, with supplies more
available than in recent weeks.
Whole dried eggs, dried whites, dried
yolks and dried blends were unchanged,
although a weak undertone was noted in
whole eggs and whites. Business slowed
during the holiday-shortened week, but
processors have noted a gradual increase
in activity since mid-August, including
some new sales.
Frozen egg product prices were steady
last week. Liquid whole eggs were down
1c a lb, but other products were steady. MBN
Cocoa
Cocoa powder markets were quiet
during the holiday-shortened week.
Even inquiries were slow.
Political conditions in top cocoa producer Ivory Coast deteriorated last week.
Peace talks between rebels and the government were termed a failure. In addition,
the entire government of Prime Minister
Charles Konan Banny resigned after toxic
waste was dumped in the main port city of
Abidjan, killing three people and sickening
hundreds. A new government was to be
formed this week. One cocoa warehouse
was temporarily closed in the city, but there
was little if any impact on the market. MBN
