Theinewsweeklyiofigrain-basedifoods Schwein sees ascent to group's helm as validation of NAMA vision AVON, COLO. - That an oat milling industry executive has been elected chairman of the North American Millers' Association stands as powerful validation of the decision for various milling groups to merge, said Rick L. Schwein, senior vice-president of Grain Millers, Inc., Eden Prairie, Minn., and president of the company's subsidiary, Grain Millers Canada Corp. Mr. Schwein was elected NAMA chairman Sept. 22 at the group's annual meeting at the Ritz Carlton Bachelor Gulch in Avon. He succeeds Guy R. Shoemaker, president of Horizon Milling L.L.C., Minneapolis. Mr. Schwein was chairman of the Ameri- can Oat Association when the group was merged into NAMA in 1999. NAMA had been formed a year earlier as a combination of the Millers' National Federation, the American Corn Millers Federation and Protein Grains Products International. "I think NAMA has given the oat industry a better vehicle to communicate our message in Washington," Mr. Schwein said. "There is no doubt in my mind that the oat industry has been well served by our partnership with the rest of the milling industry." "There was a vision when NAMA was Continued on Page 18 Horizon Milling completes acquisition of Smucker Mills, other assets MINNEAPOLIS - Horizon Milling G.P., a partnership formed earlier this year by Cargill and CHS Inc. in Canada, has completed its previously announced acquisition of the Canadian grain-based food service and industrial businesses of Smucker Foods of Canada Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of The J. M. Smucker Co. The transaction was originally announced on July 20 (see Milling & Baking News of Aug. 1, Page 1). As part of the transaction, Horizon has SNACK Make CAKES acquired three flour milling operations in Montreal; Port Colborne, Ont.; and Saskatoon, Sask.; as well as three dry baking mixing facilities in Montreal, Saskatoon and Burlington, Ont. The company also has acquired a research and development center and new Horizon Milling G.P. company headquarters in Rexdale, Ont.
