Dry milk product prices showed some
weakness last week for the first time in
more than two months, as increased milk
supply from holiday school closings allowed for increased production.
Prices of low- and medium-heat nonfat dry milk (N.D.M.) declined 1c a lb,
while high-heat was steady to 1c lower.
Demand was fair. Inventories remained
light, and some contracted orders still
were unfilled. Strong export demand was
noted in some regions. Although shipments of high-heat N.D.M. were more on
schedule, production was pushed back at
some plants to allow for increased drying
of low- and medium-heat product.
Prices of other dry milk products were
unchanged to firmer. Inventories of nearly all products were tight. Shipments fell
short of demand in some cases, although
progress was made with increased production over the holiday period.
Cheese prices were mostly higher in
light trading. Production was up. The U.S.
Department of Agriculture will tender for
mozzarella, process blend and natural
American cheese the week of Jan. 8.
Butter prices were sharply lower.
Churn increased with more cream available over the holidays. Demand eased
pending assessment of inventories after
yearend. The U.S.D.A. estimated butter
in cold storage on Nov. 30 at 88.6 million
lbs, down 36% from Oct. 31 but up 47%
from a year ago. Draw down of 50.2 million lbs in November was the largest on
record, the U.S.D.A. said. MBN

es were steady to firm. Reports of a large
export sale to be shipped after the first
of the year was expected to tighten egg
supplies in the next couple weeks.
Dried egg product prices were unchanged last week. Activity was slow
between the holidays. Demand was only
light to fair, but some processors reduced
hours, which limited offers.
Frozen and liquid products were
steady to lower. Frozen whole eggs and
salted yolks were 2c a lb lower, while
whites and sugared yolks held steady.
Demand was fair. Offers were adequate.
Liquid whole eggs dropped 1c a lb, with
liquid whites and yolks unchanged. MBN
Cocoa
Cash cocoa trading was slow and
prices unchanged last week. New York
Board of Trade cocoa futures prices were
moderately higher last week in thin holiday trading.
Cocoa beans shipments arriving at
Ivory Coast ports from Oct. 1 through
mid-December were down about 20%
from last year but were on par with average. Export declarations were down
only about 11% from a year ago. MBN
