The magazine names Flowers Foods, Inc. the "best of the best" among the 18
companies in the food, drink and tobacco category in its annual list of 400 Best
Big Companies.

General Mills, Inc. instead will give more priority to baked products with higher
profit margins. The strategic change comes after frozen baked goods sales decline
5% for the six months ended Nov. 26.

At 1,314,614,000 bus, the nation's Dec. 1, 2006, wheat inventory compares with
1,429,424,000 bus in 2005. The estimated disappearance of wheat in the second
quarter falls 12%.

The Grain Elevator and Processing Society will offer 24 hours of educational
presentations at its technical conference. A four-hour workshop will focus on the
boom in ethanol production.

The American Bakers Association hires Karin Soyster, a 16-year veteran in
association management, as vice-president of membership services and promotes
Kelly Kotche to director of membership and communications.

It was Secretary of Agriculture Mike
Johanns, in his follow-up to President
Bush's energy program in the State of the
Union address, who set the tone for what
this all means to agriculture and, yes, to
grain-based foods. "American agriculture,"
the secretary declared, "faces the greatest
opportunity of a generation to lead a future
in which we get our energy by the bushel
and not by the barrel."
Having already experienced what the
ethanol explosion has meant to demand
for corn and soybeans, with wheat pulled
along, grain-based foods now must seek to
understand what the president's expanded
goals portend. It is thankfully accepted that
this huge expansion in use of fuels made
from agricultural products requires new
technology that does not rely solely on
corn. Providing $1.6 billion for renewable
energy research, focusing on cellulosic
feedstock, reflects appreciation for the
limits of drawing down massive quantities
of corn, or any farm product.
Perhaps of greatest importance is the
nearly unanimous approval in Congress
for the president's program to cut use of
gasoline by 20% by 2017 and to replace
it mainly with renewable energy. As this
program accelerates, from what has been
an astoundingly speedy start, the American
grain and grain processing industry will find
itself in a supply-demand situation hugely
changed from the model that has governed
markets and prices for many centuries. This
is change of the most fundamental sort. MBN
