Study casts shadow over
folic acid health halo

A study warns high doses of folic acid may
increase the risk of developing precancerous
colon polyps. The Grain Foods Foundation
responds and points out the documented benefits
of folic acid.

Judged a number of ways, it is clear that
the buyers of baking and other ingredients
do not want to endure the pain of
surging costs in solitude. The 30th annual
Purchasing Seminar sponsored by Milling
& Baking News held last week shattered
attendance records in a way resembling the
highs attained in the markets that are the
principal subject of the gathering.
Final attendance at this year's event
was 508, a new "contract high" for
registration and up dramatically from
420 in 2006. Already facing a harsh
commodity environment, the purchasing
executives in attendance were greeted by
both worrying forecasts and by dramatic
price advances. While caution normally
is warranted when flour prices rise so
far above their normal range, seminar
speakers pointed to factors making
further gains a plausible risk. Additionally,
little significant downward potential was
seen in the surging market for bakery
shortening. Only in sweeteners among
major ingredients was the potential for
moderating prices seen as likely.
Against this difficult outlook, buyers
witnessed dramatic wheat futures price
gains on both days of the seminar as
weather conditions in winter wheat areas
took a turn for the terrible. The June
crop report issued on Monday (a rare
coincidence with the seminar) also added
bullishness. Misery may like company,
but purchasing executives face daunting
challenges as they seek to map strategies
for the balance of the new crop year. MBN
