BEMA bringing business education
to annual meeting in Chicago
OVERLAND PARK, KAS. - A new
series of educational programs aimed
at helping BEMA members do business better will highlight the group's
2008 Winter Summit.
The annual meeting will be held
March 1-2 at the Marriott Downtown
Chicago.
Named "Business IQ," the session
will offer an "insider's look" at implementing and running enterprise resource planning (ERP) and customer
relationship management (C.R.M.)
software. The session will be present-

ed by Rick Hoskins IV, vice-president
of sales and marketing, Foodbotics by
Colborne, Lake Forest, Ill., and Joyce
Tate, Burford Corp., Maysville, Okla.
The BEMA Winter Summit also will
feature a revised committee meeting
format as well as a panel of speakers
representing the retail baking sector.
For standing committees, BEMA is
introducing roundtable discussions
of timely topics. For the winter 2008
meeting, IBIE 2010 and ANSI/BISSC
will be topics covered March 1 immediately after committee meetings.

WASHINGTON - The North American
Millers' Association on Jan. 14 said the Environmental Protection Agency has signed
a rule making methyl bromide available to
Critical Use Exemption (C.U.E.) holders
like NAMA for 2008. With its signature,
the E.P.A. has authorized 676,920 lbs for
post-harvest structural uses, a decline of
16% from the 2007 level. NAMA said it had
voluntarily reduced its request by 5%.
Methyl bromide was to be banned with
no exceptions Jan. 1, 2001, but in 1998
NAMA successfully convinced Congress
to amend the law and set a new phase-out
date of Jan. 1, 2005, with opportunities to
apply for exemptions.
In February, the U.S. government will
be submitting documents to the United
Nations Environment Program defending NAMA's 2010 exemption request. The
2009 exemption request was forwarded
to the U.N. parties a year ago. It will be
reviewed and presumably approved later
