Rye flour output up 5.8% to recent high
WASHINGTON - Rye flour production in 2007 totaled 1,538,000
cwts, a recent peak and an increase
of 85,000, or 5.8%, over 1,453,000
in 2006, according to the annual
summary released by the Census
Bureau of the U.S. Department of
Commerce. Rye flour output was
1,262,000 in 2005, and 1,320,000 in
2004 with no report issued for 2003

from 2,998,000 in 2006. Grind totaled 2,462,000 bus in 2005 and
2,388,000 in 2004.
Rye millfeed production in 2007
came in at 9,856 tons, against 9,894
in 2006 and 10,698 in 2005.
Fourth-quarter daily capacity of
U.S. rye mills in 2007 was 12,000
cwts, against 10,000 in 2006, and

Semolina production and durum

flour numbers. Semolina output in the
2007 summary totaled 32,804,000 cwts,
up 228,000, or 0.7%, from the preliminary quarterly data of 32,576,000 and
up 856,000, or 2.7%, from 31,948,000
in 2006. It was 30,838,000 in 2005,
26,959,000 in 2004, 29,691,000 in 2003
and 32,411,000 in 2002.
Durum grind in 2007 was a record
75,115,000 bus, up 250,000, or 0.3%, from
the preliminary total of 74,865,000 and
up 1,510,000, or 2.1%, from 73,605,000
in 2006. The extraction rate in 2007 was
72.8%, up from the preliminary 72.5%

White pan and whole
wheat bread prices climb
WASHINGTON - The average price
paid for white pan bread jumped 2.3c
per lb in April, according to the latest
data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.
This followed a gain of 2.9c per lb
in March. The price of whole wheat
bread also advanced, climbing 4.7c per
lb after falling 1.1c per lb in March.
The national average retail price of
white pan bread was 137.3c, according
to the B.L.S. The April price for white
pan bread increased 17.2c compared
with April 2007. On a month-to-month
basis, the average price for white pan
bread rose in three regions - Northeast, up 8.5c, West, up 3.2c, and South,
up 1.4c - and fell in one, Midwest,
down 0.7c.
At 192c per lb, the national average
price for whole wheat bread was up
28.3c year-over-year.
The national average price of family flour in April was 51.8c per lb, up
2.9c from March and up 16.4c from
April 2007.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in April was 111.8c
per lb, up 3.9c from March. Chocolate
chip cookies were 278c per lb, up 4.6c
