Price index for baked foods,
cereal rises in month and year
WASHINGTON - The Consumer
Price Index for baked foods and cereal
products in June rose 0.7% from May,
according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.
The gain follows a 1.7% improvement
in May, but marks the first time since
January that the index failed to advance more than 1%.
The June index for Cereals and Bakery Products before seasonal adjustment
was 245.8% of the 1982-84 average, up
9.4% from a year ago. For all food at
home, the June index was 213.2, up 0.6%
from May and up 5.8% from June 2007.
The C.P.I. for Cereals and Cereal
Products in June was 214.4, up 0.7%
from May and up 8.7% from June
2007. The index for products within
this category included: flour and prepared mixes, 233.4, up 0.9% from May
and up 17.3% from the previous year;
breakfast cereal, 210.6, down 0.4%
from the previous month but up 2%
from a year ago; and rice, pasta and
corn meal, 218.8, up 2.6% from May
and up 16.9% from June 2007.
The price index for Bakery Products

in June was 262.4, up 0.6% from May
and up 9.8% from June 2007.
The June index for bread was
162.1, up 0.4% from May and up
13.7% from June 2007. Under this
heading, the C.P.I. for white bread
was 296.7, up 0.7% from May and
up 13.3% from June 2007. For bread
other than white, the index was
308.6, unchanged from May but up
14.1% from a year ago.
The price index for fresh biscuits,
rolls and muffins in June was 150.4
virtually unchanged from May but
up 9.9% from June 2007. The June index for cakes, cupcakes and cookies
was 240.4, up 1% from May and up
8.7% from June 2007. Under this segment, other price indexes included
fresh cakes and cupcakes, 247.9, up
1.9% from May and up 9.5% from
June 2007; and cookies, 232.7, unchanged from the previous month
but up 7.9% from the previous year.
The C.P.I. for other bakery products
in June was 239.1, up 0.6% from May
and up 6.2% from June 2007. Under
this heading, other price indexes in

June included fresh sweet rolls, coffee
cakes and donuts, 246.8, up 2.5% from
May; and crackers and cracker products, 278.2, up 0.3% from May. MBN

White pan and wheat bread prices rise in June
WASHINGTON - The average price
paid for white pan bread moved up 0.3c
per lb in June, rebounding from a 0.3c per
lb decline in May, according to the latest
data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of
the U.S. Department of Labor. The price of
whole wheat bread also advanced, gaining 0.9c per lb to a record 198.2c per lb.
The national average retail price of
white pan bread was 137.3c, according
to the B.L.S. The June price for white pan
bread increased 18c compared with June

2007. On a month-to-month basis, the
average price for white pan bread rose
in two regions -Northeast, up 3.9c, and
South, up 2.1c - and fell in two, West,
down 2.9c, and Midwest, down 2.7c. The
average price in the Midwest has fallen
in each of the past three months, the first
time it has recorded such a sustained
pace of declining prices since the period
between June 2005 and October 2005.
At 198.2c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread

was up 24.7c year-over-year.
The national average price of family
flour in June was 52.9c per lb, down 0.5c
from May but up 17.9c from June 2007.
The month-to-month decline marked the
first easing in prices in the category since
October 2007, according to the B.L.S.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in June was 111.7c
per lb, up 1.6c from May and up 23.9c
from June 2007. Chocolate chip cookies
were 287.5c per lb, up 0.5c from May and
up 20.5c from June 2007. MBN
