Cargill Inc. has signed a
definitive agreement with
Continental Grain Co. under
which Cargill will acquire
Continental's worldwide
commodity marketing business.
Shock waves were felt
through both the investment
and baking communities
following a statement by
Charles A. Sullivan, chairman
and chief executive officer
of Interstate Bakeries Corp.,
concerning the outlook for
I.B.C.'s current fiscal quarter.
He said, "It is probable that
earnings will fall short of our
previous expectations."

Hershey Foods Corp. has
engaged Goldman, Sachs & Co.
to help sell its pasta business,
the largest in the United States.

At the Oct. 29 grand opening of
the new U.S. Sugar Corp. refinery
in Clewiston, Fla., company
executives were joined by the
Pillsbury Doughboy. United
Sugars is the sole licensee for
Pillsbury Best sugar.

follow in developing the program proposed by the Wheat

Hershey Foods Corp. announced plans to acquire
Skinner Macaroni Co., Omaha.

An ADM Milling Co. flour mill in
Arkansas City, Kas., was flooded
last week when the Arkansas
river crested at a record 12 feet
above flood stage.
Dismissing flour miller
contentions that the U.K.
milling industry was and
would remain intensely
competitive, the Monopolies
and Mergers Commission said
that a proposed acquisition of
Spillers Milling would alleviate
the need of Rank Hovis, the
milling unit of Tomkins P.L.C.
to "compete aggressively."

The October 1938 issue of
Farm Economics published by
New York State College of
Agriculture states that "The
price of wheat in England
the last week of September in
terms of gold, was lower than
any annual price since 1571.
"Should Canada join a world
wheat cartel?" This question
was debated over a radio
broadcast recently in Canada.
Major H.G.L. Strange of the
Searle Grain Co., Ltd., a participant in the debate, answered
in the negative, urging instead
as a better solution measures
that would promote European
absorption of surplus wheat.
The Ismert-Hincke Milling Co.
acquired formal possession of
the Topeka Flour Mills Corp.
plant at Topeka, Kas., Nov. 1
and immediately began operating the mill at capacity.
The chemistry of allergy was
discussed before the Midwest
Section of the American Association of Cereal Chemists Nov.
6 by Dr. William H. Welker,
professor of biological chemistry at the school of medicine
at the University of Illinois. Dr.
Welker started his description
of the symptoms and treatment
of allergy by going into the
