White pan bread, whole wheat
prices jump in October
WASHINGTON - The average price
paid for white pan bread rose 2.2c per
lb in October, ending two consecutive
months of lower prices, according to
the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of
Labor. The price of whole wheat bread,
meanwhile, jumped 6.2c to eclipse
200c per lb for the first time.
The national average retail price of
white pan bread was 140.1c, according
to the B.L.S. The October price for white
pan bread increased 12.7c compared with
October 2007. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread
rose 4.2c per lb in the South, 3.7c per lb
in the Northeast, 1c in the Midwest and
0.5c in the West. It marked the first time
since March that prices moved up in
each of the four major regions.

flour in October was 51.8c per lb, down
1.4c from September but up 16.3c from
October 2007. The loss marked the

five months, according to the B.L.S.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in October was
