Dairy Products
Dried dairy product, butter and
cheese prices remained under pressure
last week. Cheddar cheese prices were
near six-year lows and were below government support levels. The first sales of
butter at the support price were made
to the government. Production of most
products was heavy as more milk was
available due to school closings.
Prices of 34% whey protein concentrate
continued to buck the downward trend,
ending 3c a lb higher. Inventory levels
were tight and spot offers were limited.
Higher prices attracted imports. "Progress
in contracting has been steady and some
producers report that a majority of 2009
anticipated production is spoken for," the
U.S. Department of Agriculture said.
Nonfat dry milk (N.D.M.) prices were
weak to 1c a lb lower. Inventories continued to build amid heavy outturn and
weak domestic and export demand.
About 14 million lbs of N.D.M. moved
to the Commodity Credit Corp. of the
U.S.D.A. at the 80c-a-lb support price last
week, bringing the total since Oct. 1, 2008,
to nearly 126 million lbs. All sales to the

C.C.C. have been in the West region.
Buttermilk powder prices eased 2c a lb
with stocks heavy and demand seasonally light. Lactose prices were 1c lower,
reflecting lower price levels in first-quarter contracts. Dry whey prices were unchanged although the market remained
weak with growing inventories.
Casein prices eased further after dropping sharply a week earlier to reflect lower first quarter 2009 contracted levels. Caseinate was at lower first-quarter prices.
Cheddar cheese prices at the Chicago
Mercantile Exchange dipped to $1.04 a
lb before recovering slightly. Prices still
ended below government support prices
of $1.13 a lb for blocks and $1.10 a lb
for barrels, although no cheese had yet
been sold to the C.C.C. Wholesale cheese
prices continued to decline and offers
remained heavy. Sales over the holiday
period were said to be good.
However, 121,694 lbs of butter were sold
to the government in the West region even
though prices at the C.M.E. held above at
the C.C.C. support price of $1.05 a lb. Butter production was heavy and buyers were
slow to reorder after the holidays. MBN
