Northern Foods first-half financials
in line with expectations
LONDON - Northern Foods P.L.C., a
maker of sandwiches, salads, pizza, biscuits and puddings, said first-half operating performance should be solid and
continue to drive the business forward.
Stefan Barden, chief executive officer of Northern Foods, in an interim management statement issued
Oct. 6, said the company has shown

resilience during the first half amid
tough market conditions, with likefor-like sales up 2.9% and volumes
up 2.5%.
"We continue to invest in our brands
and businesses, and we have a range
of opportunities to drive shareholder
value in the coming years," he said.

Kellogg in United Kingdom considers
burning 'logo' onto individual corn flakes
LONDON - The Kellogg Co. in the
United Kingdom said it has developed
new technology that will allow it to use
lasers to burn its logo onto individual
corn flakes. The company said the move
is an effort to distinguish its products
from imitation flakes.
"In recent years there has been an increase in the number of own brands trying
to capitalize on the popularity of Kellogg's
Corn Flakes," said Helen Lyons, lead
food technologist for Kellogg. "We want

shoppers to be under absolutely no illusion that Kellogg's does not make cereal
for anyone else. We're constantly looking
at new ways to reaffirm this and giving
our golden flakes of corn an official stamp
of approval could be the answer.
"We've established that it is possible to
apply a logo or image onto food, now we
need to see if there is a way of repeating
it on large quantities of our cereal. We're
looking into it."
Kellogg said it now will produce a

ADM acquires oilseed plant in Czech Republic
DECATUR, ILL. - Archer Daniels Midland Co. on Oct. 5 said it will expand
its European oilseed processing capabilities with the acquisition of ViaChem
Group's oilseed processing assets in
Olomouc, Czech Republic.
The facility, located in the Eastern part
of the Czech Republic, consists of an oilseed crushing, refining and biodiesel plant
that produces oil and meal for the food,
feed and energy markets, ADM said.
"This acquisition will allow ADM to
expand further its leadership position in
agricultural processing in Europe and

weighted to the second half of our financial year. At this stage of the year,
we expect to report results in line with
market expectations."
Northern Foods said its bakery division had underlying revenue growth
of 4% in the first half.
In the chilled division, underlying
sales grew 9%, driven by new discount lines in sandwiches and salads.
Frozen underlying revenue eased 8%
due to a rationalization program to support stronger margins in the division. MBN

including some branded flakes into each

According to Kellogg, the system features a concentrated beam of light that is
steered by mirror galvanometers to create multiple vectors that reflect the laser

surface of the flake a darker, toasted appearance without changing the taste,

Kraft opens Russian plant

NORTHFIELD, ILL. - Kraft Foods Inc.
has opened a new $50 million biscuit
plant in Russia in the city of Sobinka. The
facility will employ 600 and manufacture
Bolshevic brand biscuits among others.
The company called development of
the Russian market a priority and noted it
has invested more than $600 million in the
Russian economy during the past 15 years.
Earlier this month the company announced plans to build a new Biscuit
Research and Development Center just
