Dry dairy product prices continued to
advance, some sharply, with most prices
now above year-ago levels. Production
of many items was limited by seasonally
tight milk supplies and by good demand
for fluid milk from schools. Buyers seeking to build product inventories for later
in the year or into 2010 generally were
unable to do so.
Nonfat dry milk (N.D.M.) prices were
3@5c a lb higher, but the top end of some
price ranges jumped 12c or more. Outturn
declined with some processors drying only
two days a week in some areas. Spot offers were scarce while demand was strong.
High-heat N.D.M. supplies also were tight
with seasonal demand still growing.
"Most suppliers of N.D.M. in the East
are sold out until Thanksgiving," the
U.S. Department of Agriculture said.
"Users are very concerned about the
availability of future supplies."
Buttermilk powder prices rose 5c a lb
with the top end of the price range up
12@17c in some regions. Production was
steady to lighter. Demand was driven by
use as a replacement for N.D.M.

Prices for 34% whey protein concentrate
advanced 3c a lb as production fell and
outturn went to contracted buyers. Lactose
was 2c a lb higher as production eased, but
inventories were in better balance with demand. Dry whey prices edged up 1c a lb.
Supply was adequate in the Central region
but tight in the East and West.
Casein prices were firm and caseinate
values were unchanged. Global production
shifted seasonally from Europe to Oceania.
Chicago Mercantile Exchange cheddar
cheese prices were weaker, but wholesale
prices of cheddar and other varieties were
steady to firmer. Cheese production was
about steady, but some manufacturers
hoping to increase outturn for holiday
demand found milk supplies lacking.
Nearby demand was good, although
price resistance was noted in some areas.
Butter prices at the C.M.E. were slightly higher, but butter was one of the few
dairy items with prices well below yearago levels at about 30% under. Strong
cream demand for cream cheese and other holiday items limited supplies available for churning. Butter inventories were
seen as adequate for holiday demand. MBN
