Agriculture dean Fred Cholick
to lead KSU Foundation
MANHATTAN, KAS. - Fred A.
Cholick, dean of the Kansas State
University College of Agriculture,
has been named president and chief
executive officer of the KSU Foundation, effective Feb. 4. He will succeed Gary Hellebust, who has held
the president and c.e.o. position
since 1996.
"The mission of the foundation is
to provide philanthropic resources
to support K-State's mission of research, teaching, extension and service," Dr. Cholick said. "This position combines the need to optimize
traditional fundraising while instituting an entrepreneurial approach
to resource development.
"Personally, this is a new career

for me and one that will doubtless
provide great rewards. I am looking
forward to continuing to serve KState in my new role."
Dr. Cholick has been
dean of the College of
Agriculture and director of K-State Research and Extension
since August of 2004.
He oversees eight aca- Cholick

departments
with 220 faculty members, 2,050 undergraduate students and 500 graduate students.
"Fred Cholick brings a unique set
of skills to the KSU Foundation,"
said Lee Harris, chairman of the KSU
Foundation Executive Committee.

Grain Foods Foundation
promotes folic acid
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - As part of
National Birth Defects Prevention
Month, the Grain Foods Foundation
has joined with the March of Dimes
to remind all women of child-bearing age about the role folic acid
plays in preventing birth defects.
Daily consumption of folic acid, a
B vitamin, beginning before pregnancy is crucial as birth defects of
the brain and spine known as neural
tube defects (NTDs), such as spina
bifida, may occur early in the weeks
following conception.
A March of Dimes survey found
28% of women of childbearing
age know folic acid may prevent
birth defects and 11% know folic acid should be consumed prior
to pregnancy.

iba 2012 to be held prior to
Oktoberfest in Munich
MUNICH, GERMANY - The German Bakers' Confederation and
GHM Gesellschaft fur Handwerksmessen have moved the date for iba
2012 to Sept. 17-22, 2012. In moving
the date, the iba now will be held
just prior to Oktoberfest, Munich's
world-famous beer festival.
According to iba show organizers,
the date change will help reduce the
cost of accommodation for exhibitors

and visitors, as well as give participants a chance to combine iba with a
trip to the Oktoberfest.
"We are pleased that this flexible
agreement with Messe Munchen
as the centre organizer has been
reached, in the wake of the decision
to make Munich the long-term home
of iba," said Peter Becker, chairman
of the German Bakers' Confederation. "We have also taken out an

Dr. Cholick received a bachelor 's
degree in agronomy at Oregon State
University in Corvallis, a master 's
degree in agronomy at Colorado
State University in Fort Collins,
and a doctoral degree in agronomy,
breeding/genetics at Colorado State
University. He was a research associate at Oregon State University
from 1977 to 1981. He worked in
faculty positions at South Dakota
State University in Brookings from

"Folic acid is the most important vitamin women can take to
help prevent serious birth defects
of the brain and spine, and it's
most important that they start taking it before they get pregnant and
continue to take it after," said Jennifer L. Howse, president of the
March of Dimes.
The March of Dimes urges all
women of childbearing age to consume 400 micrograms of folic acid
daily beginning before pregnancy and continuing into the early
months of pregnancy. Bread, crackers, bagels, pasta, pretzels and tortillas made from enriched white flour
are sources of folic acid.
"Enriched grains are an easy, inexpensive and delicious way for
women to get essential vitamins
such as folic acid," said Judi Adams, president of the Grain Foods
