Egg Products

Dairy product prices were mixed last
week with pressure seen in nonfat dry
milk but strength in cheese and butter.
Milk supplies were easing from seasonal
peaks in some areas but holding in others.
The nonfat dry milk prices were unchanged to 4c a lb lower with the market
unsettled. Low-heat and medium-heat
N.D.M. stocks were building as spot offers met with light demand in most areas. High-heat N.D.M. prices eased despite light to moderate inventories.
Prices of most other categories of dry
products were unchanged, although a
weak market tone was evident in dry
whey. Production of dry whey remained
strong, but supplies appeared to be
mostly in balance with demand. Buttermilk powder prices were steady to firm
as production eased, inventories were
tight and demand remained strong.
Products priced on a quarterly basis,
such as 80% whey protein concentrate
and caseinate, advanced based on firmer
third-quarter pricing. Casein prices were
expected to follow due to tighter supplies.
Prices of cheddar cheese at the C.M.E.
Group and wholesale prices of other
varieties were mostly firmer last week.
Continued strong production met with
mixed demand.
C.M.E. Group butter prices surged to
19-month highs. Churning declined as
cream supplies tightened due to demand
from ice cream manufacturers.
May 31 natural cheese stocks were
up 1% from April and up 5% from May
2009, the U.S. Department of Agriculture
said in its latest Cold Storage report.
Butter stocks were up 3% from April but
down 16% from a year ago. MBN

Egg product prices were unchanged
last week, except for a 10c-a-lb jump
in dried whites and a 2c drop in liquid
whites. Demand was only fair with
supplies available. Trading was slow
to moderate and was not expected to
pick up until after the Independence
Day holiday.
Breaking egg prices were unchanged,
but some firming was noted at the
week's end. Supplies were adequate.
Retail egg prices continued to decline.
Extremely hot weather in parts of the
country reduced egg production, some
traders said, which may support prices
in coming weeks. MBN

Cocoa
Cocoa powder prices remained firm
as some processors asked higher prices
for cake as New York cocoa bean futures
rose 5% to seven-week highs, mostly on
technical trading and outside market
influences. Nearby powder demand
persisted, but trading was slow due to
tight to lacking supply. The imbalance
of ample cocoa butter and tight cocoa
powder supplies persisted with forward
butter ratios said to be weakening. MBN
