Michael Cornelis elected
chairman of BEMA
OVERLAND PARK, KAS. - Michael
J. Cornelis, vice-president of SasaDemarle, has been named chairman
of the board of BEMA, the association
for bakery equipment manufacturers
and allied firms. A member of BEMA
since 1985, Mr. Cornelis has been on
the board for six years and on the association's executive committee for the
past four years. He earlier served as
chairman of the marketing and trade
relations committees.

Additionally, Mr. Cornelis has represented BEMA on the International
Baking Industry Exposition committee, and
was instrumental in
I.B.I.E.'s
partnership
with the Louis Lesaffre
Cup competition and
the Retail Bakers Association. He also was a Cornelis
founding trustee of the
Grain Foods Foundation, serving as

Jane DeMarchi to NAWG in newly
created government affairs post
WASHINGTON - Jane DeMarchi is joining the National Association of Wheat
Growers as director of government affairs for research and technology, effective July 20.
A newly created position at NAWG,
the position will be focused on researchrelated policy issues, including coordinating industry efforts related to the commercialization of bioengineered wheat,
appropriations and administrative grantmaking processes and tracking and consolidating wheat research work being
done within the industry.
Ms. DeMarchi currently is director of
government relations for the North American Millers' Association, responsible for

advocacy on a number of issues related to
food and grain quality, safety and research.
"The new research and technology position is critical to NAWG's work in encouraging investment and innovation in our
industry's future," said Dana Peterson,
NAWG chief executive officer. "I have
every confidence that Jane has the appropriate experience and passion to lead
NAWG's efforts to coordinate existing and
emerging wheat research ventures."
In recent years, Ms. DeMarchi has
served on the executive committee of the
U.S. Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative and
the boards of the Wheat Quality Council
and the National Coalition for Food and
Agricultural Research. While at NAMA,

Kansas wheat quality survey available on
K.S.U. Grain Science web site
MANHATTAN, KAS. - The Department
of Grain Science and Industry at Kansas
State University has introduced a new
tool for tracking quality characteristics of
the Kansas wheat harvest at its web site,
www.grains.ksu.edu. The web tool is offered as part of an effort to make the data
available to international consumers, and
is sponsored by the International Grains
Program in partnership with Kansas
Wheat.
In order to track the quality characteristics, K.S.U. said the wheat samples are
tested for test weight, moisture, protein
content and a variety of other factors.
The information then is made available
through the department web site and email marketing.
"We have a unique opportunity with
our I.G.P. alumni, who are primarily executives in the agriculture industry, to help
promote the wheat industry and benefit

Kansas producers," said Mark Fowler, associate director of the I.G.P. "Our course
participants come from all over the world
and are eager to follow harvest as it happens in Kansas. This mapping and marketing tool will make it easier for them to
receive the information sooner."
The survey provides a GIS mapping
tool, producer profiles and harvest updates, as well as industry commentary.
David Schemm, a wheat producer
from Sharon Springs, is participating as a
featured producer in the quality survey.
He said he believes in the quality of the
wheat grown in Kansas.
"I would tell an international buyer that
just as consumers' likes and tastes have
changed over the years, so has Kansas
wheat," he said. "Farmers and breeders
are focused on raising high-quality wheat,
and using the latest technology to provide a
clean, quality, and safe product." MBN

a better BEMA," Mr. Cornelis said.
Also joining BEMA's executive
committee was Damian Morabito,
president of Topos Mondial Corp.
Mr. Morabito was named third vicechairman. Other individuals named to
BEMA's board of directors were Robert Miller, vice-president of BakeTech
Systems, and Bruce Campbell, vicepresident of dough processing technologies for AMF Bakery Systems. MBN

Ms. DeMarchi worked closely with the
National Wheat Improvement Committee and NAWG to secure federal funding
for wheat research.
Ms. DeMarchi will spend some time
working on food safety and food aid issues for NAWG. She is an active member
of the Agricultural Food Aid Coalition,
which supports the use of U.S. commodities in U.S. Department of Agriculture
and U.S. Agency for International Development food aid programs.
Prior to joining NAMA, Ms. DeMarchi
held positions in the area of economic
development and trade promotion for
the Ohio Department of Development
and the U.S. Department of Commerce in
Ohio, Hong Kong and Shanghai.
An Ohio native, Ms. DeMarchi holds a
bachelor of arts degree from Dartmouth
College in Hanover, N.H. MBN

Independent bakers select
new logo
WASHINGTON - The Independent
Bakers Association has unveiled a new
logo and has begun transitioning to the
new design. According to the I.B.A., Scott

Barth of Barth Packaging Inc., Coplay,
Pa., created the logo. Members of the association voted between a number of potential designs, and the choice was finalized during the group's annual meeting
in June in Washington.
"I.B.A. members agreed that the new logo
depicts a clearer 'IBA' font and will help
market our brand better," the group said.
"This update to the logo is also a reflection
of the refresh taking place inside our business and our renewed sense of purpose." MBN
