bakery products in August was
266.3, down 0.4% from July and
down 0.5% from August 2009.
The August index for bread
was 157, down 1.9% from July
and down 2.5% from August
2009. Under this heading, the
C.P.I. for white bread was 290,
down 0.1% from July and down
2% from August 2009. For bread
other than white, the index was
294.7, down 4.3% from July and
down 3.7% from a year ago.

Whole wheat bread
price plummets
WASHINGTON - The average price paid for whole wheat
bread plunged 7.4c per lb in
August to 168.1c per lb, according to the latest data from the
Bureau of Labor Statistics of the
U.S. Department of Labor. The
retail price of whole wheat bread
has now fallen 14c per lb in the
past four months, and, at 168.1c
per lb, is at its lowest level since
April 2007, when it was 163.7c.
The national average retail price
of white pan bread, meanwhile,
was 137.2c, up 1.2c per lb from
July but down 0.3c from August
2009. It was only the second
time the average price has exceeded 137c per lb in 2010. On
a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread
rose in three regions - up 4.4c
in the South, up 1.1c in the West
and up 0.7c in the Northeast -
and fell in one region - down
1.9c in the Midwest.

WASHINGTON - Ted Redmond, a retired vice-president
of bakery/deli for The Kroger
Co., will be part of a panel
presentation to baking groups
at the International Baking Industry Exposition Sept. 28 in
Las Vegas. The panel will be
presented jointly by the Executive Leadership Development
Committee of the American
Bakers Association and the

Society of Bakery Women. Mr.
Redmond began his Kroger
career in 1977 as a candy plant
production supervisor. He
held a number of positions in
sales and marketing during
the years that followed before
being named bakery/deli vicepresident in 2004.

Senate confirms new
head of food safety
WASHINGTON - The Senate on Sept. 16
confirmed Elizabeth Hagen as
Undersecretary
for Food Safety,
making her the
top food safety
official at the Hagen
U.S.
Department of Agriculture. Prior to
her new post Dr. Hagen was
the U.S.D.A.'s chief medical officer and a senior executive at
the department's Food Safety
and Inspection Service. The
Senate also confirmed Catherine Woteki as Undersecretary
for Research, Education and
Economics. Dr. Woteki, who
served as the first Undersecretary for Food Safety from 19972001, most recently was global
director of scientific affairs at
Mars, Inc.

Krispy Kreme hires chief
marketing officer
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Dwayne Chambers has been
named senior vice-president
and chief marketing officer of
Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc.,
effective Sept. 27. Mr. Chambers has more than 20 years of
quick-service restaurant marketing and brand development
experience. In his new position he will lead all domestic
and international marketing
operations for Krispy Kreme.
Most recently he was senior
vice-president of marketing
and brand development at
Fuddruckers. He earlier held
senior marketing positions at
Sonic, Red Robin and Noodles
