Dairy products

Dairy Products
Dry dairy product prices were mostly
unchanged last week. Wholesale cheese
prices weakened. C.M.E. Group cheese
and butter values held about steady.
Milk volume available to processors increased due to school closings.
Nonfat dry milk prices were narrowly
mixed in the Central and East and held
steady in the West as production of lowheat and medium-heat product increased.
Inventories were light but expected to
build modestly over the holiday period.
Demand was mixed amid slow trading.
Prices of most other dry products were
unchanged. Dry whey supplies remained
tight, and some processors had to ration
shipments. Trading was slow ahead of
the holidays. Contract negotiations for
2011 were ongoing for several products.
Butter and cheddar cheese prices
at the C.M.E. Group were mostly unchanged. Buyers will assess inventories
after holiday sales subside.
November milk production in the 23
major states was 14,411 million lbs, up
3.1% from November 2009, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest
Milk Production report. MBN

Egg Products
Trading in egg products slowed last week
and was expected to remain so until the first
week of January. Although processors ran
reduced schedules because of the holidays,
egg supplies were limited because the wide
premium for graded eggs pulled breaking stock into retail channels. Breaking egg
prices were about 2c a dozen lower.
Dried whole eggs, whites and blends
declined 5c a lb while yolks held steady.
Frozen whole eggs dropped 3c, whites

were down 1c and yolks were steady to
down 2c. Liquid whole eggs and yolks
were 2c lower but whites held steady. MBN

Cocoa
Cocoa powder prices were firm to
higher with 10% to 12% natural powder
advancing 5c a lb and selling above cocoa butter levels last week. Activity was
slow during the holiday period with attention on filling gaps in first-half 2011
coverage amid limited supplies and
booking for the July-December period.
Cocoa bean futures prices remained
high as tensions turned to violence in
top producer Ivory Coast, when incumbent Laurent Gbagbo defied election results recognized by local, regional and
international groups and refused to step
aside so newly elected Alassane Ouattara could become president. Some feared
a civil war similar to that of 2002-03.
Press reports indicated cocoa bean supplies in Abidjan, the largest city and port,
were about 30% below normal last week,
but supplies in other areas were near normal. Trade sources said processors with
plants in the Ivory Coast were buying cocoa butter in other markets as a hedge in
case exports were interrupted. MBN
