Win Wallin, former executive at
Pillsbury, Medtronic, dies at 84
MINNEAPOLIS - Winston R.
(Win) Wallin, who spent 37 years
at The Pillsbury Co. before leaving
to head a medical technology company, died Dec. 20. He was 84.
A native of Minneapolis, Mr. Wallin served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps
for two years after graduating from
Minneapolis South High School in
1943. After leaving the service, Mr.
Wallin enrolled in the University of
Minnesota, majoring in business administration.
He joined Pillsbury after graduating in 1948, rising from the position
of trainee in the grain department.
After a 10-year assignment in Ogden, Utah, Mr. Wallin returned to
corporate headquarters in Minneapolis in 1965. In 1977 he was elected
president and chief operating officer. He was responsible for the company's agribusiness operations, restaurant businesses (including Burger King and Steak and Ale) as well
as the company's packaged foods
and international operations. During much of his time as president,
Pillsbury was the largest flour milling company in the United States.
Mr. Wallin left Pillsbury in 1985
to assume the top spot at Medtronic
Inc., a struggling medical technology company. While he had little
experience in the medical device

industry, Mr. Wallin had served as
a director at Medtronic since 1978.
While there, Medtronic grew dramatically, acquiring nearly a dozen
medical technology companies and
broadly diversifying its business.
He retired as chairman in 1996, when he
was named chairman
emeritus.
His tenure set the
stage for a surge in the
company's business in
the 1990s. Medtronic
Wallin
split its stock twofor-one six times between 1989 and
1999. Overall, the company shares
appreciated in value more than
1,600% during his tenure as c.e.o.
and has a market capitalization today of $39.8 billion. General Mills,
Inc., which acquired Pillsbury in
2001, has a market capitalization of
$23 billion.
Mr. Wallin served on other numerous corporate boards, including
Cargill, Bemis, Supervalu and U.S.
Bank as well as various non-profit
boards. He established Wallin Education Partners, a program designed
to improve college graduation rates
for promising students with financial need.

William Entenmann III, grandson
of Entenmann's founder, dies
BAY SHORE, N.Y. - William Entenmann III, grandson of the
founder of Entenmann's, Inc., died
Jan. 1 at South Side Hospital in Bay
Shore. He was 79 years old.
Born in Bay Shore in 1931, Mr. Entenmann was the youngest of three
brothers (Robert and Charles), and
began at the company by cleaning
ovens and decorating cakes.
When William Entenmann Jr. died
of a heart attack in 1951, his widow,
Martha, and William, Charles and
Robert made changes that helped
set in motion rapid growth over the
next three decades.
Seeking to tap into growth in
baked goods sales at supermarkets
and facing a shift away from retail

bakeries, the family phased out its
bread business and delivery routes.
Instead, the company focused on the
baking and wholesale distribution
of pastries and cakes to the growing
number of supermarket chains serving New York City and
its suburbs.
Having incorporated in 1958, the company was headed by
Robert, Charles and
William,
as
chairman of the board and Entenmann III
chief executive officer,
president and chief operating officer and executive vice-president,
respectively. Martha was a vicepresident of the company.

University of Minnesota. In the
early 1990s, he was a special adviser to President Nils Hasselmo
overseeing the Academic Health
Center. He was chairman of a $35
million capital campaign for the
University of Minnesota Cancer
Center and in 1992 was awarded the
Outstanding Achievement Award.
In 1995 Mr. Wallin was presented
an honorary doctor of laws degree
from the University of Minnesota
Medical School. More recently, he
was chairman of the Dean's Board
of Visitors for the University Medical School.
He also served as a Trustee of
Carleton College from 1983-2001
and was chairman from 1991-99. He
was awarded an honorary doctorate
from the school.
Internationally, Mr. Wallin was
chairman of the Caux Round Table,
an organization established in 1986
by business leaders around the
world with the purpose of promoting moral capitalism.
Mr. Wallin is survived by his wife
of 60 years, Maxine, and four children, Rebecca Wallin (Don); Brooks
Wallin (Catherine); Lance Wallin
(Sharon); and Bradford Wallin (Cynthia) and 13 grandchildren.
A visitation was held Dec. 28 at
the Washburn McReavy Edina Chapel in Edina, Minn., and a Jan. 7 celebration of life was to be held at the
McNamara Alumni Center at the
University of Minnesota campus. MBN
Rather than expanding as an independent company, the family sold
the business in 1978 to Warner-Lambert Co., one of the nation's largest
pharmaceutical and consumer products companies, in a transaction valued at $230 million. The company
subsequently changed hands several
times over the years and currently is
owned by Bimbo Bakeries USA.
Mr. Entenmann III retired from
the bakery in the late 1990s.
Survivors include his wife, Christine, of Islip, N.Y.; two daughters,
Denise Walsh of Southern Pines,
N.C., and Jaime Padden of Islip; a
son, William of Elkton, Md.; two
grandchildren; and brothers Charles
and Robert.
