Horizon Milling reaches 20-year safety milestone at Stockton mill
STOCKTON, CALIF. — Horizon Milling is marking 20 years without a single employee lost-time incident at its Stockton flour mill. The company said the achievement, which dates back to the flour mill’s opening, reflects a longterm focus at Horizon on “creating awareness and maintaining diligence about safe practices and behaviors.” Troy Anderson, vice-president of operations at Horizon Milling, described creating and maintaining a safe work environment as a “core value at the company.” “For us to be successful, safety must be a shared mindset of all of our employees,” Mr. Anderson said. “The team in Stockton is proving that reaching a goal of zero lost-time incidents is not only possible, but sustainable.” Elaborating on its safety programs, Horizon said it takes a “behaviorbased approach to safety,” which includes ongoing training, focused safety observations and peer-to-peer feedback to reinforce safe behavior and eliminate barriers to a safe work environment. Local managers in Stockton credited employees for continuous effort to keep and enhance workplace safety for one another, customers and other onsite visitors. “This milestone is a direct reflection of the commitment of our employees,” said Rich Rostomily, manager of the Stockton mill. “It’s because of their dedication to

creating a safe workplace that we’ve had zero lost-time incidents over the past two decades, and we will continue to work hard to maintain this level of safety performance for years to come.” The largest flour milling company in the United States, Horizon Milling is a joint venture of Cargill and CHS, Inc., with Cargill as the managing partner. The company operates 18 mills in the United States with a combined daily milling capacity of 270,500 cwts. The Stockton and San Bernardino mills in California are the only ones of the 18 built by Cargill, in 1992 and 1989, respectively. The remaining mills were either acquired or came into Horizon from CHS. The Stockton mill, the newer of the two, has daily milling capacity of 15,000 cwts. Malt-O-Meal and Pepperidge recognized as ‘hot brands’
NEW YORK — Malt-O-Meal cereal and Pepperidge Farm Goldfish recently were recognized by Advertising Age magazine as two of America’s “hottest” 25 brands for 2011. According to Advertising Age, Minneapolis-based Malt-O-Meal breakfast cereal “doesn’t have an ad agency, never runs focus groups and even bypasses such fundamental marketing tactics as freestanding inserts.” Despite that, the brand grew sales by 5.1% in the year ended Sept. 4. “To be successful, we know we have to do things very differently than big corporation cereal marketers like General Mills, Kellogg’s, and Post,” said Paul Reppenhagen, director of consumer marketing and strategy for Malt-O-Meal. “We’re proving that our non-traditional approach can work just as well as the accepted ‘norm’ of high prices, lots of expensive television advertising, FSI coupons, and constant in-store price

FMC BioPolymer to raise certain prices 15%
PHILADELPHIA — FMC BioPolymer, a division of FMC Corp., said it will raise the price on all FMC branded microcrystalline cellulose, carrageenan and alginate-based products by up to 15%, or as contracts permit, effective Jan. 1, 2012. “While FMC BioPolymer continues to identify and implement productivity improvement programs to mitigate the impact of rising costs, continued increases in raw materials, energy and transportation costs make this pricing action necessary in order to continue to provide the highest quality products to the food, personal care, industrial and pharmaceutical industries,” the company said. Gavilon to build edible oil facility in California
OMAHA — Gavilon, L.L.C. said it will build an edible oil processing, transloading and storage facility in Stockton, Calif. The company will partner with Singapore-based Wilmar International Ltd. to import and process palm, coconut and palm kernel oils to serve the California and neighboring West coast markets. “Our partnership with the leading producer of palm and lauric oils brings unique product and logistic offerings to the California market that are not available today,” said Alex Fox, director

of strategy and development at Gavilon. “The combination of Wilmar’s raw material and processing strengths, Gavilon’s marketing and distribution capabilities, and a new, state-of-the-art facility will provide significant supply chain benefits for our customers.” The facility will be located in the Port of Stockton and is expected to be operational by mid-2013.
