Egg Products
Egg and egg product prices were mostly unchanged last week, further illustrating the market may have stabilized after sharp declines, especially in eggs, during the first half of January. Breaking egg prices were steady amid moderate supplies and slow to moderate demand. Graded egg prices also were mostly unchanged, although supplies were a bit heavier and demand was light to moderate. Egg product trading was moderate and in some cases was slow. Dried whole egg prices declined 5c a lb, mostly for less-than-carlot shipments, while prices of dried whites, yolks and blends were steady with some weakness again noted on smallersized loads. Prices of frozen and liquid egg products were unchanged. December production of edible liquid whole eggs was 141 million lbs, down 2% from December 2010, liquid whites were 52 million lbs, down 10%, liquid yolks were 26 million lbs, down 9%, and inedible was 19 million lbs, down 7%, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Egg Products report. Cocoa
The cocoa powder market was weaker last week as some major processors continued to be more aggressive in their offers. Natural powder prices were mostly unchanged, but red and black powder prices declined sharply in some cases. Sales of natural, red and black powder for the current year were evident with some interest but few sales for 2013 also noted. Cocoa bean futures in New York tumbled about $200 a tonne early last week but recovered some at the week’s end on support from outside markets. The cocoa market overall was unsettled with indications of weaker-than-expected cocoa demand in Europe but strong demand in Asia (China, India and Indonesia), indications of lower 2011-12 cocoa bean production and confusion over a new auction system as top-producing Ivory Coast sought to forward-sell its 2012-13 cocoa bean crop. The Ivory Coast’s auction was met with skepticism and a lack of participation by major processors due to confusion and uncertainty over the plan’s details. Dry weather has reduced and delayed mid-crop cocoa bean production in the Ivory coast, prompting analysts to trim 2011-12 production forecasts. MBN
