WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread and whole wheat bread both decreased in August, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. The national average retail price of white pan bread was 140.7c, down 2c per lb from July and down 6.7c from August 2011. At 190.5c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 6.9c per lb from July and down 6.9c per lb from August 2011. The national average price of family flour in August was 53.1c per lb, up 1.5c from July but down 0.6c from August 2011.

Corner Bakery Cafe expanding in Northwest
DALLAS — Corner Bakery Cafe, a fast-casual bakery cafe, has signed a franchise agreement to open its first restaurants in the Northwest beginning in 2013. Northwest Bakery Cafe, L.P., a group of veteran restaurant operators who also own 95 Jack in the Box locations, plans to open 18 restaurants in and around Seattle over the next seven years. This is the sixth new development agreement, totaling 81 new restaurants that Corner Bakery Cafe has awarded so far this year. Overall, 22 agreements have been signed representing more than 279 new restaurants. Corner Bakery Cafe plans to double its footprint in the United States over the next four years through franchiseand company-owned cafes.

Kansas State receives OSHA grant
MANHATTAN, KAS. — Kansas State University has received a grant from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to create a course on combustible dust generation and explosion hazards in grain handling facilities. OSHA will give K.S.U. $120,000 to develop the program. The training will be provided to workers and supervisors employed in small grain elevators, flour mills and feed mills. K.S.U. will develop training materials, including course materials, hand-outs with pictorial explanations and an instructional DVD. Materials will be available in English and Spanish. A train-the-trainer component will be included. OSHA awarded 72 recipients nationwide with $10.7 million in safety training grants. MBN
