David Acheson to present to
A.B.A. and A.T.B.I. at joint meeting
WASHINGTON — David Acheson,
managing director of food and import
safety practice at Leavitt Partners, is
scheduled to speak at the joint American Bakers Association and Allied
Trades of the Baking Industry board of
directors meeting on June 7 in Washington.
The joint board meeting between
the groups will be held June 6-7 and
will deal with a range of issues facing
the baking industry.
“The Food Safety Modernization
Act established sweeping reforms to
federal food safety laws,” said Robb
MacKie, president and chief executive
officer of the A.B.A. “Dr. Acheson is
an expert in this area and has worked
with the baking industry before. His
perspective on the F.S.M.A. requirements and practical implications of
the recent Food and Drug Administration’s preventative controls proposal
will lend additional insight to the baking industry.”
Prior to joining Leavitt Partners,
Dr. Acheson was the chief medical officer at the U.S. Department
of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service and then in 2002
joined the F.D.A. as the chief medical officer at the F.D.A. Center for
Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. After serving as the director of
C.F.S.A.N.’s Office of Food Defense,

Communication and Emergency Response, he was named assistant and
then associate commissioner for
foods, which provided him an agency-wide leadership role for all food
and feed issues and the responsibility
for the development of the 2007 Food
Protection Plan, which served as
the basis for many of the authorities
granted to the F.D.A. by the F.S.M.A.
A day earlier, on June 6, Senator Dan
Coats of Indiana will serve as keynote
speaker at a joint dinner of the A.B.A./
A.T.B.I. boards.
Mr. MacKie described
Mr. Coats as a “longtime ally of the baking
industry” and a highly
respected U.S. senator.
“An expert in health
care, defense and forAcheson
eign policy, the A.B.A.
and A.T.B.I. boards will benefit greatly
from Senator Coats’ perspective at
this critical time for our country,” Mr.
MacKie said.
Mr. Coats serves on the Senate Appropriations; Commerce, Science and
Transportation; Joint Economic; and
Select Intelligence committees. He will
address the boards on major Washington issues, including health care
reform, the farm bill and the current
intelligence and security concerns in
Syria, Libya and elsewhere. MBN

Marc Albers of United States
Bakery to A.B.A. board
WASHINGTON — A roster of four
new members of the American Bakers
Association board of directors has been
announced by the A.B.A.
and includes Marc Albers,
president and chief operating officer of United States
Bakery, Portland, Ore.
Also joining the A.B.A.
board will be Kevin McDonough,
president of Interbake Foods L.L.C.,
Richmond, Va., part of Weston Foods
Ltd. Mr. Albers and Mr. McDonough
will begin their tenure as board members effective with the June 2013 board
meeting.
Two other additions to the A.B.A.
board became effective earlier this year.
In March, Joe Turano, president of
Turano Baking Co., Berwyn, Ill., joined
the A.B.A. board, succeeding his uncle

Renato (Ron) Turano, a former A.B.A.
chairman.
At the A.B.A. annual meeting, Rick
McGrath joined the board in
his post as president of the
Allied Trades of the Baking Industry. A senior vicepresident at Lockton Companies, Kansas City, Mr. McGrath succeeds Tim Miller at A.T.B.I.
and on the A.B.A. board. Mr. Miller is
a senior vice-president at Cereal Foods
Processors, Inc., Mission Woods, Kas.
Kenneth (Chip) Klosterman, another past chairman of the A.B.A.,
also rotated off the group’s board. Mr.
Klosterman, president of Klosterman
Baking Co., Cincinnati, had been “one
of the most active voices on the board
since he joined in March 1996,” the
