One year after first broaching
the idea of a product promotion campaign to bolster
grain-based foods, the American Bakers Association has
approved financial support
for such an effort.
Challenges facing the baking
industry are so severe and so
wide ranging that the industry will be forced to change
in ways that
have been resisted for years,
Gary J. Prince,
president of
Weston Foods,
Horsham,
Prince
Pa., predicts.
Mr. Prince on
March 17 became chairman of
the American Bakers Association and spoke with Milling &
Baking News in an interview.
The United States has filed
a case in the World Trade
Organization over Mexico's
20% tax on beverages not
sweetened with cane sugar.
The Mexican tax is aimed at
blocking HFCS exports from
the United States.
Donald L. Mennel, president
of The Mennel Milling Co.,
Fostoria, Ohio, confirmed
that the company is negotiating the sale of its Roanoke
flour mill to the City of Roanoke Housing and Redevelopment Authority.

Brian Maxwell, who cofounded PowerBar with his
wife, Jennifer, died March
19. He was 51 years old. Mr.
Maxwell, a former worldclass marathon runner, collapsed after suffering from a
heart attack while at a post
office. In March 2000, the
Maxwells sold the company
to Nestle S.A. for $375 million.

family-owned 109-year-old
independent wholesale baker

filed for protection under

rejection of its contracts with

A plan has been published for
a national health service for
Great Britain, in which, it may
be assumed, nutrition will
take a high place. As to bread,
it is realized that it will have
to be "fortified," but there is
some uncertainty as to the
method.
Mississippi and Kentucky are
the latest states to enact legislation for the compulsory enrichment of flour and bread.

a writer in the Evening News
as follows: "Windmills are
being brought back to life by
the war. They can grind corn
and cattle food without using
fuel. Money is being provided to enable derelict mills
to start up again."

The Kansas City plant of the
Corn Products Refining Co.
remained shut down practically all of last week, while
two other plants of the company, at Pekin and Argo, Ill.,
have sufficient corn on hand
to continue limited operations
for only a few more days.
The first meeting of the newly elected and enlarged board
of governors of the American
Bakers' Association, which
includes many new members,
went on record as approving
the enactment of mandatory
enrichment legislation by
states as may be sponsored
by nutrition groups, provided such legislation covers
white bread and white rolls
and provides for optional
enrichment methods.
Honoring their benefactor
W.N. Kelly, vice-president of
the Wm. Kelly Milling Co.,
a crew at the Pratt Air Base
near Pratt, Kas., has named
a big bomber the "Kelly
Komet." Mr. and Mrs. Kelly
donated the furnishings for a
pilot lobby, a lounging room
for pilots, at the Pratt base.
Invasion of India to a depth
of seven or eight miles by
Japanese forces and confused
advices as to the war along
the Burma-India front attracted attention in burlap
circles last week. The general
assumption seemed to be that
no real danger exists to the
