Products help with winter
wheat crop issues
Corbion Caravan, Lenexa, Kas., has many products to
help bakers manage drought-related winter wheat crop
issues, said Huifen He, director of product development.
For two examples, Arco Pro relaxer is a protease enzyme
blend for relaxing the dough without fear of overdosing
and LC-5 Assist
is a concentrated
blend of L-Cysteine
and stabilizing
excipients.
This year a
deluge of rain
after a prolonged
drought has led
to a significantly
lower crop yield
and wheat likely
to require recipe
adjustments,
according to
Corbion Caravan.
"Lower yields
often lead to higher
protein content
that impacts dough
water absorption
and mixing time,"
Ms. He said. "To
compound the
challenges, the
heavy rains during
harvest time can also contribute to sprout damage that
influences the natural enzymes present in the wheat flour.
The sprout damage can result in poor baking quality."

Tate & Lyle to invest in
starch production in Indiana
Tate & Lyle, London, plans to invest more than $90
million in its Lafayette, Ind., operations over the next
three years. A three-phase expansion at the Lafayette
Sagamore facility will increase modified food starch
production capacity. Tate & Lyle also will increase
efficiencies at its Lafayette South facility.
The planned expansion and upgrades should be
complete in 2017. Tate & Lyle, which employs more than
500 people in Indiana, plans to add about 10 positions to
the workforce in Lafayette. The company also has grain
elevators in Francesville, Ind., and Fowler, Ind.
"Tate & Lyle continues to be one of Lafayette's leading
industries," said Tony Roskwarski, mayor of Lafayette.
"This latest investment and pledged job creation is one
of many investments that the company has made here in
their local plants."

AAK makes acquisitions in
Colombia, Turkey
A year of activity continued in July for AAK, Malmo,
Sweden, as the producer of vegetable oils and fats systems
made acquisitions in Colombia and Turkey.
AAK on July 10 said it had acquired Fabrica Nacional
de Grasas S.A. (FANAGRA), which is based in Bogotá,
Colombia, and specializes in vegetable oils and fats for the
bakery segment. FANAGRA employs 155, had revenues
last year of about SEK270 million ($39.9 million) and has
an annual volume of 30,000 tonnes. The company has a
plant in Villavicencio, Colombia.
On July 18 AAK reported it had agreed to acquire the
Turkish frying oil brand Frita from Unilever. The Frita
brand covers the food service market and had revenues of
about SEK75 million ($10.9 million) in 2013.
"Frita has a very good reputation in Turkey, and AAK
Turkey already covers 80% of the Frita customers with
our current bakery distribution," said Torben Friis Lange,
president Asia, CIS and Middle East. "By acquiring Frita,
we will extend AAK Turkey's product offerings."
Previously in 2014, AAK made moves in Brazil and
Belgium.
The company plans to invest about SEK400 million
($61.7 million) over two years in the construction of a
specialty and semi-specialty edible oils factory in São
Paulo, Brazil. AAK also acquired the oils and fats business
of CSM Benelux NV n Merksem, Belgium. CSM Benelux
NV supplies bakery markets in Belgium, The Netherlands
and France. The company had revenues of about SEK970
million in 2013.
