THE NEWS WEEKLY OF GRAIN-BASED FOODS MAY 12, 2015 / TRANSPORTATION AND DISTRIBUTION Initial NASS flour data show output off slightly from same period in '14 Grain transportation picture vastly improved from 2014 Story on Page 26 LATE NEWS Adjusted Snyder's-Lance profits nearly flat CHARLOTTE, N.C. - "Better-foryou" and premium products delivered solid sales at Snyder's-Lance, Inc., as the company's net revenue in the first quarter ended April 4 increased 8% to $402,341,000 from $373,016,000 a year ago. Net income fell 37% to $10,636,000, equal to 15c per share on the common stock, from $16,816,000, or 24c per share. Last year's first-quarter results included a $6,322,000 benefit from discontinued operations. "New products such as our Cape Cod Dipping Shells, Snyder's of Hanover Poppers and Lance Quick Starts are gaining wide acceptance as we gain new users and Continued on Page 8 WASHINGTON - Wheat flour production in January-March 2015 totaled 103,116,000 cwts, down 0.7% from the first quarter of 2014. The 2015 figure was presented in the first Flour Milling Products report issued May 1 by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The 2014 figure was based on data gathered by Veris Consulting, Inc., on behalf of the North American Millers' Association and interpolated by Milling & Baking News to encompass the entire U.S. flour milling industry. Output in the first quarter also was down 4.9% from a revised 108,376,000 in October-December, a number also provided by NASS. Although NASS, Veris (as interpolated) and earlier Census statistics are not strictly comparable, initial indications are that the aggregate U.S. flour production figures are close enough to provide meaningful comparisons. In addition to first quarter 2015 flour data, NASS published production data for the final two quarters of 2014, thus allowing side by side comparisons with NAMA figures. October-December NASS flour of 108,376,000 was 0.3% less than the earlier interpolated Veris number of 108,741,000, for the same period and July-September, at 106,826,000 cwts, was 0.6% below the Veris estimate of 107,448,000 cwts. By contrast, a far wider margin was indicated in the estimates for whole wheat flour production as Continued on Page 20 Grupo Bimbo looks to reshape profile of U.S. bread business MEXICO CITY - Behind the company's introduction of new better-for-you varieties of bread under the Healthfull brand is a plan to fundamentally change the product profile of Bimbo Bakeries USA, top company executives said April 24. As previously reported, operating income of the U.S. and Canada business of Grupo Bimbo S.A.B. de C.V. was 342 million pesos ($22 million) in the first quarter ended March 31, up 264% from 94 million pesos in the first quarter last year. Net sales were 24,935 million pesos ($1,628 million), up 35% from 18,415 million. The higher profits for the quarter were attributed by the company to lower costs associated with the company's "reconfiguration and optimization strategy." The company has invested heavily in plant closings and other cost savings initiatives in recent years. The costs totaled 439 million pesos ($29 million) during the first quarter, versus 594 million in the first quarter last year. First-quarter B.B.U. operating margins, while a thin 1.4%, were nearly tripled from 0.5% a year earlier. The 35% surge in quarterly sales was Continued on Page 12
