The formation of a search
committee for a new chief
executive officer of ConAgra
Foods Inc. was announced
May 10 by the company. Bruce
Rohde, chairman and c.e.o.,
formally asked the ConAgra
board to establish the committee, which will be headed by
Steven F. Goldstone, a director
and the retired chairman and
c.e.o. of RJR Nabisco.
Interstate Bakeries Corp. will
close its bakery in Charlotte,
N.C., and will consolidate
routes, depots and thrift
stores in its Mid-Atlantic
Profit Center.
The owners of Vermont Bread
Co., a baking company specializing in premium natural
and organic bread, muffins
and other baked foods, have
sold a controlling interest in
the business to Charterhouse
Group, a New York-based
private equity firm.
Lance, Inc. has
named David
V. Singer, president and chief
executive officer, effective
immediately.

Continental Baking Co., in a
major structural reorganization prior to the relocation of
its headquarters from Rye,
N.Y., to St. Louis, has consolidated its six regional offices
into four divisions.
In a major realignment of
responsibilities, Interstate
Brands Corp. has named three
executives to new positions in
western region baking operations, it was announced by
Robert W. Hatch, president
and chief executive officer.

Bakers and other producers of
wheat-based foods "would be
foolish" to wait for the Food
and Drug Administration to
develop specific guidelines
concerning health claims for
food and should proceed with
promoting a "fantastic" story
for their products, directors
of the Wheat Industry Council were told at their annual
meeting in Washington. In a
colorful review of the ongoing
controversy surrounding government regulation of health
claims for food, Peter Barton
Hutt, partner, Covington and
Burling, told the May 7 Wheat
Industry Council banquet,
"you have a fantastic story to
tell, and I think you ought to
start doing it."
The Agricultural Marketing
Service of the U.S. Department
of Agriculture, which monitors
the nutrition education and
promotion council programs
of the Wheat Industry Council,
has advised the Council that
its "Wheat: Heart of Nutrition"
slogan is not acceptable.
Watson Foods Co., Inc., Woodside, N.Y., began construction
of a new 45,000-square-foot
manufacturing plant at West
Haven, Conn., with a sign
raising ceremony led by John
Watson, president.

The first week following announcement of the unconditional surrender of Germany

of the House of Congress.
Revocation of Limitation Order L-292, which controlled
the production and delivery
of processing machinery,
including flour milling and
baking equipment, was announced by the War Production Board May 15.
Cargill has concluded negotiations for the purchase
of the Cedar Rapids, Iowa,
property of the Honeymead
Products Co.
Word was received in Kansas
City by Gustave Eisemann,
vice-president and general
manager of the Continental
Grain Co., that his nephew,
S/Sgt. Erich I. Goldschmidt
was wounded fatally in action in Germany March 1.
The will of the late Edgar
Palmer, head of the New Jersey
Zinc Co., who was the largest owner of baking stocks in
America, provides for a legacy
estimated at nearly $4 million
for Princeton University.
Thomas Montgomery Howell,
noted grain and stock speculator, died at the Doctors
hospital in New York May 10.
He was 62 years of age. Mr.             
Howell was barred from trading privileges on all grain
futures markets as a result of
an alleged corner in corn in
Chicago in July 1931.
A celebration was conducted
May 15 in
Philadelphia
to mark the
golden anniversary of
Scattergood &
Co, a grain and
Toll
feed business
that stands
high in the East and throughout the country, and the 50th
birthday of Louis D. Toll,
who heads the business.
