said it will close three of its

In letters just received from
Holland, it is revealed that
two widely known members
of the Dutch flour importing
trade, Messrs. I. and S. van
den Bergh, died in the BergenBelsen concentration camp
early this year. In commenting
on the difficulties of the war
years, the van den Bergh firm
writes: "You no doubt have
heard of the measures the Germans have taken against the
population of occupied countries, measures that were so
cruel and so terrible that people that have not experienced

able to believe what has happened during these five years."
"If the contributing countries
fail to implement their promise to provide the liberated
areas of the world with relief
rapidly, efficiently and generously, the name of the United
Nations will be a mockery in
Europe this winter," Herbert
H. Lehman, director general of
the United Nations Relief and
Rehabilitation Administration,
declared in London Aug. 8.
In a broadcast Aug. 23, Secretary of Agriculture Clinton
P. Anderson, in discussing
the food outlook, stated that
"farmers can be assured that
there is need for every bit of
food they are producing and
that there will be plenty of demand here and abroad for this
food at good prices."
The Bureau of the Census reported that the population of
the United States July 1 was
139,682,000, a gain of more
than 8,000,000 for the last five
years. The increase for the
5-year period was almost as
much as the gain of 8,894,000
in the population for the preceding 10 years.
The highest price since World
War I, $1.95½ per bu, was paid
in Minneapolis Aug. 27 by the
International Milling Co. for a
car of No. 3 dark
northern new crop
spring wheat, testing 19.6% protein.
Loose-Wiles Biscuit Co. made announcement that
it will erect a new
baking and candy
plant in the Fairfax
industrial district
of Kansas City,
Kas., to cost about
