Flour milling specialist joins K.S.U.
as Bühler instructor of milling
MANHATTAN, KAS. - Kansas State
University (K.S.U.) graduate Jason
Watt has joined the faculty of the university's Grain Science and Industry
Department and the I.G.P. Institute as
the Bühler instructor of milling.
Mr. Watt has a bachelor's degree from
K.S.U. in milling science and management. Upon graduation he worked as
the head miller for ConAgra Mills and
saw it through its transition to becoming part of Ardent Mills. He also was
involved in food safety and employee
training. He returned to the university in
August to begin his instructor position.
"Jason brings a wealth of experience,
youthful enthusiasm and real world
credibility that will be beneficial to his
teaching and our students," said Gordon Smith, grain science department
head and director of the I.G.P. Institute.

Teaching upper level undergraduate courses and co-leading the BühlerK.S.U. trainings is the primary focus of
Mr. Watt's responsibilities.
"Through my experiences, I've
gained an understanding of how
milling principles are the same
across various equipment manufacturers," Mr. Watt said. "I am
anxious to share my knowledge
with undergraduate students as
well as industry professionals."

As he looks ahead, Mr. Watt
said he hopes to build on the strengths
of the program and help it grow.
"I look forward to helping generations of millers prepare for the industry that awaits them through innovative teaching methods," he said. "I
also hope our industry professionals
will be excited about working with the

graduates who will be joining them."
Along with the undergraduate
teaching, Mr. Watt will lead the training efforts with Bühler through the
I.G.P. Institute. Several Bühler-K.S.U.
courses are offered throughout the
year, including classes for expert millers and milling executives.
"Through the Bühler-K.S.U.
courses, industry professionals
are able to continue their education for life-long learning, which
brings tangible benefits to their
employers," Mr. Smith said. "Jason's recent industry experience
and direct connection to the grain
science and industry department
is an asset in adult education."

Philip Baur Jr., former chairman
of Tasty Baking, dies at 84
BLUE BELL, PA. - Philip J. Baur Jr., former chairman of Tasty Baking Co. and
president of its Tastykake Inc. subsidiary,
died Aug. 30 at his vacation home in Florida. He was 84 years old.
Mr. Baur's father, Philip, co-founded
Tasty Baking in 1914 along with Herbert C.
Morris. The younger Baur joined the company after graduating from Haverford College in 1952, a year after his father's death.
Mr. Baur held many positions at the company, but his most significant contribution
came in the early 1980s when the company's signature line, Tastykakes, were experiencing profit declines for the first time
in more than six decades. With the help of

the 1960s who had gone on to become a
lawyer and accountant, Mr. Baur was able
to wrest control away from the chief executive officer at the time, Paul R. Keiser. Mr.
Keiser, who was Mr. Baur's brother-in-law,
had been c.e.o. for nearly 30 years.
Following the replacement of Mr. Keiser,
Mr. Harris assumed the title of president of
Tasty Baking and was given the additional
title of c.e.o., while Mr. Baur was named
chairman, a position he held until 1998. In
2003, he was named chairman of the Quality
Council, where he was responsible for expanding the company's efforts to ensure that
every Tastykake product meets the highest
quality standards. After his retirement, Mr.
Baur remained on the board of directors.
He was preceded in death by a son,

Andrew, in 2013. Survivors include his
wife, Barbara; two sons, Philip III and
Paul; two daughters, Susan Beatty and
Sandra Bixby; 17 grandchildren, and 10
great-grandchildren. MBN

Mike Maurine to president
of The Long Co.
ELMHURST, ILL. - Mike Maurine has
been named president of The Long Co.,
effective Oct. 1. He will be replacing Bill
Zimmerman, who will be retiring at the
end of September.
Mr. Maurine brings a wealth of experience in the baking industry, including
management positions at Ventura Foods,
AB Mauri/Fleischmann's Yeast, Cargill/
Horizon Milling and Best Brands. Most recently, he was director of bakery sales and
