YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO - Steven P. Cooper has been promoted to president of Schwebel Baking Co. He succeeds Paul Schwebel, who is retiring after 48 years with the company. Mr. Schwebel will remain as a member of the board of directors and company adviser. Mr. Cooper has more than 30 years of experience in the baking and grain-based foods industries. He joined Schwebel in May 2015 as chief operating officer. Prior to that, he was general manager at J&J Snack Foods Corp. Earlier, he was senior vice-president at Hostess Brands. He started his career at CooperSmith, a family-owned wholesale baking company. Founded Continued on Page 8 CHICAGO - Hostess Brands, L.L.C. has been busy. In addition to launching several new and reformulated products, the Kansas City-based company in May quietly acquired Superior Cake Products, Inc., Southbridge, Mass., a maker of in-store bakery items under the Superior on Main brand. "Superior on Main is an in-store bakery company that makes wonderful éclairs, brownie bites, madeleines, black and white cookies, very high-quality products that sell into club and grocery and other in-store bakery outlets," said William D. Toler, chief executive officer of Hostess Brands, in a May 24 interview. "We're going to use that as part of our strategy to move into that part of the store." At the Sweets & Snacks Expo, held May 24-26 in Chicago, Hostess highlighted its new line of brownies featuring Milky Way and M&M's candy brands, which was developed in a partnership with Mars, Inc. Additionally, the company William D. Toler, Hostess Brands, L.L.C. touted the recent revival of the iconic Suzy Q's snack cake and featured its newly reformulated line of Mini Muffins. During an exclusive interview at the show, Mr. Toler discussed the company's innovation strategy, as well as its response to consumer demand for simple ingredients. For examples, parsley packs in vitamins and turmeric offers a natural source of yellow color. The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends people consume less than 2,300 mg of sodium per person per day, but the average intake is about 3,400 mg per person per day in the United States. For one of its sodium reduction recommendations, the Dietary Guidelines advises people to flavor foods with herbs and spice instead of salt.
