their views of the new chief
executive officer of Kraft
Foods, Inc., Wall Street analysts warned that no "instant
turnaround" should be expected with Irene Rosenfeld
at the reins of the nation's
largest packaged foods company.
An undercover Federal Bureau of Investigation probe
has resulted in the arrests of
three individuals accused of
stealing confidential information from The Coca-Cola
Co. and trying to sell it it to
PepsiCo, Inc. PepsiCo alerted
arch-rival Coca-Cola about
the offer, and Coca-Cola
turned the matter over to the
F.B.I.
An enzyme originally developed for food processing has
been identified as a promising treatment for celiac
disease. The enzyme, a new
prolyl endoprtease (PEP), has
been shown to break down
gluten molecules and the T
cell peptides that cause celiac
disease.
Kraft Foods Inc. said it will
acquire the Spanish and Portuguese operations of United
Biscuits, a move that will
return Kraft the rights to all
Nabisco trademarks, including
Oreo and Ritz, in the European
Union, Eastern Europe, the
Middle East and Africa.

Ralston Purina Co. will acquire
Drake Bakeries from Borden,
Inc., which has owned the
98-year-old sweet goods producer the past four decades.
The board of directors of
American Bread Co., Nashville, Tenn., has elected F.
Bernard Evers Jr. to chairman of the board of the
97-year-old baking company.
Succeeding Mr. Evers as
president and chief executive
officer is his brother, Charles
K. Evers, previously executive vice-president.

135,000 tonnes of durum annually (daily milling capacity
of about 6,000 cwts).

Edward C. Stott, second
eldest son of the late David
E. Stott, head of the David
Stott Flour Mills at Detroit,
died June 21, from injuries
received in a fall at the Englewood Club that day. Mr.
Stott, 52, was one of seven
children sharing in the Stott
fortune, variously estimated
at $10 million to $14 million.
The Mennel Milling Co. of
Toledo, Ohio, has purchased
the flour mill and elevator of
the Northwestern Elevator
& Mill Co. at Mount Vernon,
Ohio.
Brilliant crop reports on
wheat from Canada and the
United States and further
improvement in European
wheat production prospects
have increased hopes of a
relaxation of American wheat
controls during the present
crop year.
While bakers of the country
are "taking it on the chin"
with flour costs averaging
$1.50 per cwt higher, practically no bread price increases
have been announced in any
major cities and few have
