Egg Products
Egg product prices were little changed
last week. Prices of dried whites were lowered 15c a lb, and liquid whole eggs were
lowered 2c a lb while other product prices
were unchanged. Demand for yolks continued to drive the product market (and
contributed to excess supplies of whites),
although that may begin to wane as fall
approaches and sugared egg yolk use by
ice cream manufacturers decreases.
Breaking egg values eased slightly but
were more stable after tumbling about
50% from levels that already were below
cost of production in early July. Some
trade sources expected prices to strengthen as producers reduce output of both
processing and retail eggs through forced
molting and culling of flocks. Many remained surprised that the industry didn't
reduce egg production more significantly
much earlier as prices have been under
cost of production for nearly six months,
and they questioned how significant the
current cutback may be. Eggs offered to
processors remained moderate to heavy
amid only light to moderate demand.
A year ago, in the throes of a massive
outbreak of avian influenza, egg prices

peaked at record highs in early August
and since have declined about 95% to
historic lows. Egg product prices peaked
between July and September of last year
and also were significantly lower. MBN

Cocoa
Cocoa powder prices were unchanged
last week. There were indications that one
major processor was sold out for the remainder of 2016. While supplies may be
tight, most buyers have needs covered
for the year, although some demand remained. There continued to be buyer interest in adding to 2017 coverage.
Cocoa butter prices quoted by the Cocoa Merchants Association of America
surged $491 a tonne, or 7%, in the two
weeks ended Aug. 5 and were up $1,545
a tonne, or 26%, from a year earlier. Cocoa butter supplies were seen as tight
due in part to poor crop quality and reduced grind in West Africa.
New York cocoa bean futures had a
few days of exceptionally high trading
volume last week, which was seen mostly
as speculative activity related to concerns
about weather in West Africa, although
overall fundamentals were unchanged. MBN
