The engagement of a major consulting firm
is nothing unusual in the food industry but
is far less commonplace in baking. So, the
decision by Flowers Foods, Inc. to partner
with Accenture in what Flowers has dubbed
Project Centennial is noteworthy. The
announcement coincided with a decrease in
Flowers' earnings guidance for the current
year and came not long after the company
trimmed its long-term sales and earnings
growth targets.
Exactly what Project Centennial will
entail has not been disclosed, but given the
extraordinary expansion of the company's
business in recent years, perhaps such an
undertaking could be considered inevitable.
After all, effectively absorbing large and
struggling enterprises like Tasty Baking Co.
and the Hostess Brands bread business is
no small task. The same may be said for the
successful businesses Flowers is digesting
- Lepage Bakeries, Dave's Killer Bread and
Alpine Valley Bread.
Still, it would be a mistake also to
overlook the challenges with its existing
core business that Flowers has identified
and that are likely to be part of Project
Centennial. The company has fought to
retain the market share and profitability
of its powerhouse Nature's Own brand.
The decision to launch Project Centennial
highlights subtle but meaningful changes
under way in baking and the degree to
which the bar for success has been elevated.
If Flowers has decided to take bold action
to adapt to these changes it is cause for
optimism both with regards to the company
and as a model for all of baking. MBN
