Egg Products
Dried and frozen egg products prices
again mostly were unchanged. Liquid
whole egg and white both declined 1c a
lb while liquid yolk was steady.
Trading continued at a mostly
steady pace after the holiday break.
Processors' inventories were adequate
to heavy. Most were wary of adding
to stocks even with low egg prices
because there was no expectation of a
significant jump in egg products demand or prices before the end of the
year that would justify carrying larger
inventory. Processors that were part of
vertically integrated operations with
in-house egg supplies, though, were
said to be building products stocks in
some cases to utilize the eggs.
Breaking stock egg prices were steady
to slightly firmer last week. Offers to processors were moderate to heavy while
processor demand mostly was light.
Graded egg movement increased last
week but mostly only when eggs were
featured at attractive prices. One major
Midwest grocery featured large eggs at
49c a dozen, which an industry source
said was below the cost of production

before packaging and distribution. December typically sees good demand for
retail eggs because of holiday baking. MBN

Cocoa
Cocoa powder prices continued to
weaken in slow sales. Most business for
2017 was completed, as in the case for
larger users. With cocoa bean futures
prices nearly flat through 2018 and a larger crop forecast, there was little incentive
to rush into additional transactions.
Cocoa butter prices from the Cocoa
Merchants Association of America as of
Nov. 25 declined for the fifth consecutive
week. At $6,013 a tonne, the price was
down nearly 20% from a year earlier.
After cocoa butter users short covered
needs last summer with significant contracting, demand dropped off sharply,
pulling prices 25% lower since August.
Meanwhile, prospects for a larger
2016-17 cocoa bean crop kept improving as bean arrival at Ivory Coast ports
began to catch up after a slow start and
weather outlooks were favorable.
New York cocoa bean futures held in
their recent trading range on either side
of $2,400 a tonne last week. MBN
