Durum production sets record as
Statistics Canada recaps 2016

recap for Canadian agricultural production in 2016. Many principal crops
saw production increases from last year,
and durum production set a new record.
At the same time, a wet harvest season and
even snow prevented the completion of
some harvests and took a toll on quality.

2015 outturn at 27,594,100 tonnes and
the largest since the record 2013 crop at
37,529,600 tonnes. The 2016 Canadian allwheat crop was the nation's largest after
that record 2013 crop.
Canadian durum production set a new
record at 7,761,800 tonnes, which was up
2,373,100 tonnes, or 44%, from 5,388,700
tonnes in 2015. The 2016 crop was 19%
larger the previous record outturn of
6,504,500 tonnes in 2013.
Canadian spring wheat production was
estimated at 20,453,800 tonnes, up 491,500
tonnes, or 2%, from 19,962,300 tonnes in
2015. The spring wheat crop was the third
largest on record trailing both 21,297,700
tonnes in 2014 and the record 27,238,700
tonnes in 2013.
While Canadian spring wheat and durum production was higher than a year
ago, a shift toward wet weather during
harvest took a toll on average quality. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (A.A.F.C.)
noted in its November 17 Canada: Outlook
for Principal Field Crops report that the average quality of the 2016 durum crop was
lower than a year ago and the five-year
average. The average protein content also
was lower than the 2015 crop but was near
the recent five-year average. The A.A.F.C.

the record outturn of 4,752,200 tonnes in
2008. The A.A.F.C. said the quality of the
eastern winter wheat crop was good.
Canadian oats production was estimated at 3,146,800 tonnes, down 8% from
3,427,700 tonnes in 2015. The A.A.F.C. said
the Prairie oats crop suffered quality losses
due to rain, snow and cool temperatures,
depending on location. The ministry observed Manitoba fared better as the harvest was more advanced and missed much
of the delayed harvest and damage that occurred in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
The A.A.F.C. said it expected Canadian
oats exports to increase in 2016-17 due to
lower 2016 U.S. oats production.
Statistics Canada estimated Canadian
canola production in 2016 at 18,423,600
tonnes, up 47,100 tonnes from the 2015 outturn of 18,376,500 tonnes. It was the nation's

second largest canola crop after the record
18,551,000 tonnes harvested in 2013.
The A.A.F.C. noted the quality of the
canola harvested before wintry conditions
set in across the Prairies was "near normal," which was to say, very good. There
remained some fields that will have to be
harvested in the spring. The ministry said
the quality of the canola harvested in the
spring may be seriously degraded. MBN
