approaching 30% completed, still ahead
of the recent five-year average despite
rain delays. The current U.S.D.A. forecast
for Brazilian soybean production was 104
million tonnes, up 8% from 96.5 million
tonnes in 2015-16 and compared with the
nation's current record outturn of 97.2
million tonnes in 2014-15. Some analysts
forecast this year's Brazilian soybean
crop to be as large as 107 million tonnes.
The premium to soybean oil futures
asked for cottonseed oil has narrowed
in recent weeks. The market anticipated
this premium to narrow further should
forecasts for a second consecutive year
of larger cotton plantings be realized. In
its agricultural projections through 2026,
the U.S.D.A. forecast area planted to upland cotton in 2017 at 10.5 million acres,
up from 10 million acres in 2016 and compared with 8.4 million acres in 2015. A return to a more typical premium between

to win back some lost demand.

steady last week following the increased
activity seen the previous week. Prices
mostly were steady to lower.
Soybean oil prices declined. Soybean
oil futures dropped in sympathy with
weaker soybean futures, which bore the
weight of an advancing record Brazilian
soybean harvest and expectations for yet
another year of record soybean plantings
in the United States. The cash basis on
soybean oil remained weak.
Declining soybean oil futures encouraged users to continue booking what
supply was required to keep oil contract
balances extended from 60 to 75 days.
Basis coverage for the second quarter averaged about 75%. Basis coverage for the
third quarter remained only about 15%
with buyers anticipating weaker basis
levels in coming weeks.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture
indicated net export sales of soybean oil
during the week ended Feb. 16 totaled
12,700 tonnes for delivery in 2016-17, up
29% from the previous week but down
52% from the prior four-week average.
